If you have not been to the databases area on the library website you're missing out on some great materials available to you.

In particular, you should check out Safari Tech Books Online. This is a group of tech e-books. There are books about many software titles found in the studio at this location. You can search by topic. For instance, if you need to learn about cropping video in final cut pro or how to take red-eye out of a picture in photoshop you can find it here. Internal Microdrives. The end of video tape?

JVC has been showing off the world's smallest 3CCD Camcorder, the GZ-MC500E. Part of the reason the camcorder is so small is because it lacks of an internal video tape mechanism. The camera records MPEG2 video directly onto tiny 4GB Microdrives (For an idea how much video this is, 4GB is roughly the capacity of a DVD-R). These drives can easily be upgraded to larger capacity as they become available.

The advantages of direct-to-hard disk recording are numerous. The cameras themselves become smaller, more reliable, and use less battery power. The video files they generate can easily and quickly be transfered to a computer or burned onto a DVD. And most importantly, no more video cassettes to deal with!

Gizmodo has a nice collection of information about this camera here.
A hands-on review of the camera can be found here (via infosyncworld).

BBC R&D White Paper WHP053: DV looking like Film

Abstract

There have been many attempts made to generate television pictures that have "The Film Look" while being generated electronically. Most have concentrated on mimicking the temporal appearance of film, while others have concentrated on contrast handling. Some have done both, and more. The issues of sharpness and depth of field are rarely tackled. This document investigates all of these major aspects of the film look and analyses the properties of film and electronic image generation to find out exactly how they are different and why, and how that difference can be minimised. The "BBC setup" conditions now adopted in some television cameras exploit this work, notably in PSC camcorders used for HDTV image capture. Although aimed primarily at HDTV cameras and their use in attempting to mimic and thereby encourage their replacement of film usage, the principles explored here could apply equally to all forms of video cameras provided that their control ranges are sufficiently flexible.

Comment from Jody Eldred

I received an email from Jody Eldred in response to this entry. While I was hoping to highlight the increasing accessibility of HD-based cinematography, Mr. Eldred pointed out some important distinctions.

Let it be known: I definitely am NOT leaving my F900 CineAlta for ANYTHING, especially the Z1U! The Z1U is a terrific camera, and is "as-advertised" (actually, it exceeds expectations.) But as I stated repeatedly in my Sundance workshops, it is NOT a replacement for the F900, nor will it ever be. There are vast differences in the two (beside price), and wherever it is physically or fiscally reasonable, the F900 will always be my first choice.

That said, the Z1U is the replacement for nearly any other format besides HDCam. It delivers four times the resolution of the famed Panasonic DVX-100 and Canon XL-2, so those beloved cameras are now, unfortunately, obsolete.

For me, it will be a nice addition to my arsenal. There are places a smaller 1080i camera are necessary (mounts on various modes of transport come to mind), but it will always remain the younger, smaller brother to the F900.

Same family, same genes, same heritage, just the little brother. And always will be.

Stockstock 2004 Film Festival

The Stockstock film festival is rather unique. It's about editing, not production. When you register, you will be sent a miniDV tape with stock footage that you can edit into a finished movie (three minutes max). The stock footage will come from the Prelinger Archives, a repository of public domain films (now owned by the Library of Congress). This emphasis on editing is a great way to promote an awareness of public domain material as a source for derivative works, and emphasizes the importance of the public domain (and why copyright legislation should encourage rather than obliterate, a "domain" of freely accessible works for public use in creating new works). Everyone who registers (it costs 20 dollars) gets the same footage. Deadline is June 15 for entries.

Build Your Own Steadycam

Often the "cool" shots I see are cool because they capture motion in rather long sequences with no cutaways and are composed at angles and with a steadiness that is really impossible without some sort of camera stabilization. I think of some of the long flowing sequences in a Fincher film or in the television series ER (75% of the scenes were shot using the Steadicam). A Steadicam is required for this, but is also quite expensive. If you're ready to make your own steadicam for just 14 dollars, John Lee has a great how to article. There are also some short quicktime movies demonstrating the effect.
