ARIZONA STUDENT SENTENCED FOR COPYRIGHT VIOLATIONS
ARIZONA STUDENT SENTENCED FOR COPYRIGHT VIOLATIONS A student at the University of Arizona who pleaded guilty to unauthorized possession of copyrighted movies and music has been sentenced to three months in prison, three years' probation, and 200 hours of community service. The 18-year-old student, Parvin Dhaliwal, was also fined $5,400. Andrew Thomas, attorney for Maricopa County, noted that illegal possession of intellectual property is a felony. Thomas said some of the movies Dhaliwal had copies of were, at the time, only being shown in theaters. Dhaliwal was also ordered to take a copyright course at the University of Arizona and not to use file-sharing programs. WhiteHouseTapes: The Gift that Keeps Giving
This site is designed as a service to the research community by making freely available all of the presidential recordings, along with relevant research materials, so that scholars, teachers, students, and the public can hear and use these remarkable tapes for themselves. The site is hosted and maintained by the Presidential Recordings Program at the University of Virginia's Miller Center of Public Affairs. The Presidential Recordings Program, directed by Timothy Naftali, was established by the Miller Center in 1998 to make the secret White House recordings accessible through transcripts and historical research. These recordings constitute an extremely rich historical resource, but one that cannot be unlocked without considerable time and experience in working with the tapes. Once unlocked, the tapes can, are, and will make significant contributions to our understanding of recent political history and how the U.S. government works. To that end, the PRP brings together historians, journalists, and a talented team of student interns to work with these materials to transcribe, annotate, interpret, and share them.

Archiving the Avant-Garde
Works of digital and Internet art, performance, installation, conceptual, and other variable media art represent some of the most compelling and significant artistic creations of our time. These works constitute a history of alternative artistic practice, but because of their ephemeral, technical, or otherwise variable natures, they also present significant obstacles to accurate documentation, access, and preservation. Without strategies for preservation many of these vital works— and possibly whole genres such as early Internet art— will be lost to future generations.. Archiving the Avant Garde: Documenting and Preserving Variable Media Art.

BBC R&D White Paper WHP053: DV looking like Film
Abstract
There have been many attempts made to generate television pictures that have "The Film Look" while being generated electronically. Most have concentrated on mimicking the temporal appearance of film, while others have concentrated on contrast handling. Some have done both, and more. The issues of sharpness and depth of field are rarely tackled. This document investigates all of these major aspects of the film look and analyses the properties of film and electronic image generation to find out exactly how they are different and why, and how that difference can be minimised. The "BBC setup" conditions now adopted in some television cameras exploit this work, notably in PSC camcorders used for HDTV image capture. Although aimed primarily at HDTV cameras and their use in attempting to mimic and thereby encourage their replacement of film usage, the principles explored here could apply equally to all forms of video cameras provided that their control ranges are sufficiently flexible.

Comment from Jody Eldred
I received an email from Jody Eldred in response to this entry. While I was hoping to highlight the increasing accessibility of HD-based cinematography, Mr. Eldred pointed out some important distinctions.
Let it be known: I definitely am NOT leaving my F900 CineAlta for ANYTHING, especially the Z1U! The Z1U is a terrific camera, and is "as-advertised" (actually, it exceeds expectations.) But as I stated repeatedly in my Sundance workshops, it is NOT a replacement for the F900, nor will it ever be. There are vast differences in the two (beside price), and wherever it is physically or fiscally reasonable, the F900 will always be my first choice. That said, the Z1U is the replacement for nearly any other format besides HDCam. It delivers four times the resolution of the famed Panasonic DVX-100 and Canon XL-2, so those beloved cameras are now, unfortunately, obsolete.
For me, it will be a nice addition to my arsenal. There are places a smaller 1080i camera are necessary (mounts on various modes of transport come to mind), but it will always remain the younger, smaller brother to the F900.
Same family, same genes, same heritage, just the little brother. And always will be.
