MacDesign Magazine has added a daily dose of Photoshop tips to its web site. These "tips of the day" (some basic, some not) cut through the interface and conceptual fluff (do you really need to learn about the channel mixer if you're never going to need it).

Web Design: Some Best Practices
piepmatzel.de has collected an (almost) comprehensive list of sites devoted to web design. Thanks to angiemckaig.com for the link.
Often "usability" is associated with good web design, and the (contested) guru of this world is Jakob Nielson. But there are alternatives. (There's an obvious design difference going on with these two sites...) And its refreshing to read words like "beauty" and "sublime" when talking about web design. From V-2's article:
"The result of thinking (and feeling) deeply about web design is a site that absolutely fulfills the informational needs of its users, but that evokes in them the feeling that they are more aware, better informed, maybe even a little hipper than they were before they came across it. The problem with the Jakob Nielsen approach is that a site designed solely from the perspective of usability is useless from the perspective of emotion."

I/O Brush: The Natural Tendency to Sample?
The Tangible Media Group at MIT's Media Lab, devoted to the "seamless couplings between physicality and virtuality," has developed the I/O brush. This thing looks like a paintbrush, but is actually a video camera with light and motion sensors inside. Aimed at children (4 and up), this object allows you to "paint" with samples on a special canvas. And as Matt Haughey muses, this is "one giant derivative work creator."

Public Domain Photos
PDPhoto.org is a repository of public domain photos (some of which are rather nice). Since they are in the public domain (or at least have some sort of Creative Commons license attached to them that encourages derivative/non commercial uses), they are free to use.
The library also has a growing collection of digital library content and commercial databases available for non-commercial uses.

iMovieFest.com
Another community/sharing site has launched around Apple's "digital lifestyle" apps. iMovieFest.com claims to be "an exclusive film community for Mac filmmakers... iMovieFest.com also gives you access to online movie galleries where you can rate/review movies you've seen, get exclusive tutorials, download free sound effects, participate in interactive forums, fun filmmaking contests and other goodies that will give you the tools and skills you need to make great movies!" Although you can know everything about iMovie (a mere software app) or Final Cut Pro for that matter, making great movies is another thing altogether. Having said that, Tarnation, made with iMovie and for 200 dollars, was a hit at Cannes.

Design and Dollars
An article from FastCompany where execs ponder how design can be "transformative..." From Proctor and Gamble's chairman: "You don't appreciate Tide's cleaning ability in every laundry load. But you appreciate the design of the cap every time you use the laundry detergent."
From Nokia Vice President:
"My mission was to change this little black blob with mini buttons into a colorful object of desire."
From Gap President:
"Plus, making just a bottom is a lot cheaper."
Rep from OXO International:
"If you can design a product that appeals to people's brains and hearts, you can get them to pay a great premium."
From President of Genzyme Corp:
"But the strategic value of architecture is not frightfully complex."
My reaction:
Hmm, I guess it is easy to confuse shopping with creativity.
