Conversation: IT Traffic Center Message
Subject: [LANMAN] IT Traffic Center Message

A number of users are experiencing network problems that are affecting connectivity to university websites from off-campus.

These problems appear to be associated with traffic coming in through the WVFiber uplink. Network Services has opened a trouble ticket with WVFiber and they are currently investigating the issue.

If you are off-campus, you may continue to have problems connecting to UT website, until the issues are resolved.

Putting Materials on Reserves

Digital Production Services at Hodges Library is currently accepting course reserve reading lists for the fall 2007 semester.

If you want your Hodges Library reserve collections (print or electronic) ready by the first day of classes, please submit your request by August 14, 2007.

If your material is not needed by the first day of class, please help us distribute the work flow more evenly by bringing those requests to us at a later time.

We process reserve requests on a first-come, first-serve basis, and fall semester brings our heaviest volume. Requests submitted after August 14 may fall into our backlog queue. When in backlog, requests may take at least 7 days to process and prepare for your class. The backlog period often lasts until the middle of September. Once the backlog passes, we are able to process most requests in 24 hours.

We have approximately the last three years of your reserve requests. This way, we can recycle your old reserve lists into new.

Please bring new requests to Room 170, Hodges Library or email the reserve services staff (hodgesreserve@utk.edu). MS Word or other attachments are welcomed. You can also email or drop off our interactive request form, available at http://www.lib.utk.edu/reserve/faculty/reqform.pdf.

For more information about Hodges Library Reserve services, like submissions, instructions, FAQs, etc, please refer to our Course Reserves Web site at http://www.lib.utk.edu/reserve. You can call Digital Production Services at 974-4121 Monday-Friday, 8 am-6 pm.

If Pendergrass Agriculture-Veterinary Medicine, DeVine Music, Map, or Social Work-Nashville branch libraries provide your primary reserve services, you may contact those libraries directly.

We look forward to working with you!

IEEE down on Aug 4

On Saturday, August 4, IEEE will perform planned upgrades to our systems.
These upgrades require that IEEE Xplore will be offline from 9AM to 9PM EDT. We will post a message to the IEEE Xplore home page to alert users to the expected disruption. The system upgrades will enable us to support subscribers more effectively. Most changes will not be visible to IEEE Xplore users, but users will see updates to the display of IEEE Standards and miscellaneous maintenance fixes.

The downtime will affect all products delivered through IEEE Xplore including IEL, ASPP, POP, IEEE Enterprise, IEEE Power & Energy Library, and IEEE Standards Online.
Please alert your users so they can schedule their projects accordingly.

Thank you for your patience while we improve our systems.

New Database: CSA Illustrata

CSA Illustrata: Natural Sciences is the first in a series of CSA Illustrata databases of searchable tables, figures, graphs, charts and other illustrations from the scholarly research and technical literature.

Try it now>>

CSA employs what it calls "deep indexing" to categorize data, variables and other content represented in tables, maps, photographs and other figures. Usually, indexing of research articles is done at a rather high, general level where only the key concepts of the work are represented by a dozen or so index terms, but by going deeper and specifically indexing the content associated with all the individual tables and figures, CSA Illustrata enables the researcher to find information that otherwise would not be retrievable in traditional, article-level indexing systems. Search results - the objects - can be viewed in full along with the caption, author and source information and additional index terms that can be used for further searching. A link back to the parent record provides a summary view of all the objects associated with that paper. In most instances, the parent abstract is displayed and context is further preserved by links to the full-text documents when available. Thus the researcher can find relevant data faster and, because of the visual impact of the results, can quickly determine whether or not to spend time reading the source documents. The visualization of data and the interdisciplinary nature of CSA Illustrata: Natural Sciences can also lead to unexpected discoveries or connections between seemingly disparate pieces of work.

Database Trial: IRIS

The IRIS Database currently contains over 9,000 active federal and private funding opportunities in the sciences, social sciences, arts, and humanities. In addition to funding opportunities for faculty, the IRIS Database also contains fellowships and scholarships for grad students and undergrads. Users can search IRIS by sponsor, deadline date, keyword, and other criteria. Most IRIS records contain live links to sponsor Web sites, electronic forms, or Electronic Research Administration (eRA) portals. The IRIS Database is updated daily.

The IRIS Alert Service enables students, staff, and researchers at subscribing institutions to create their own IRIS search profiles. Users can select their preferred search frequency, delivery method (e-mail or Web), and keywords. The program runs the user's profile against the IRIS database and delivers the search results automatically via e-mail or the Web.

New Acquisition: North American subset of the Plant Taxonomic Literature

Using funds from the Dr. C. D. Sherbakoff Library Endowment, UT Libraries
has been able to purchase the North American subset of the Plant Taxonomic
Literature microfiche collection. This set of fiche offers a "core
collection of the rarer and more useful basic reference works in plant
taxonomy."

I have posted a list of the works included in the set at
http://www.lib.utk.edu/refs/biology/ptlNA.html. The fiche themselves are
housed in the Documents & Microforms department on the second floor of
Hodges Library. The call number for the set is QK 96 .P47 1985. There is
a guide to the set with the same call number; this is also available in
the Documents department. I have marked the works in the guide that we
own with a check.

The works included in this important collection are not accessible through
the library catalog, so you'll have to remember to check the list when
you're looking for older North American botany materials. I am working on
getting records into the catalog, but didn't want to delay letting you
know about this resource while I figure out the cataloging issues.

The collection is wide-ranging and diverse, including works on vascular
and non-vascular plants as well as fungi and fossil plants. Works on a
continental scale are included alongside more focused works such as W. H.
Pearson's List of Canadian Hepaticae and William Darlington's Flora
Cestrica ("an herborizing companion for the young botanists of Chester
County, Pennsylvania").

Many classics of American botany are included, such as Gronovius's Flora
Virginica, Nuttall's Genera of North American Plants, Sargent's Manual of
the Trees of North America, and Torrey's Catalogue of North American
Genera of Plants, but many of these are already available in more
convenient formats. The real strength of the collection is in the odd and
rare items which are not available as reprints. These include:

* Amos Eaton's Manual of Botany for North America (an earlier edition than
any previously in our collection)
* John Ellis's sixteenth-century publications regarding the Venus Fly-trap
* A rare German edition of Humphry Marshall's Arbustrum Americanum
* A number of short works on Hawaiian plants by explorer J. F. C. Rock
* An 1857 "Catalogue of Plants Gathered ... in Central Park"

There is also a fair amount of travel and exploration literature,
especially regarding the arctic regions.

I hope that this will be helpful to you in your research and teaching. If
you have any questions about this collection or anything else relating to
the library, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Top 10 things NOT to miss in 2005 @ Your Library

10. Workshops

Several workshops are being offered, including Web of Science, Google Scholar, EndNote, and Metasearch. Faculty and Students are welcome; online registration.

9. The Teaching Library

Thinking of creating an assignment that involves library research? Want a place to send your students to learn about plagiarism or get basic tutorials on how to use the catalog and other library resources? The Teaching Library is your one stop shopping area for these types of tools.

8. Environmental Semester at the UT Libraries

The Libraries are holding several events for Environmental Semester and are taking this opportunity to promote our resources related to the Environment. To keep up with the Libraries' Environmental resources and events, see our Environmental Semester News page (RSS available).
Of particular note to Biology faculty and students is the E. O. Wilson Reading Group. Readings are online; the group will meet 3 times to discuss topics related to Wilson's writings. This is in preparation for Wilson's visit to UT on March 15. We hope we will get quite a few Bio faculty & students to participate in the reading group.

7. Finding Full Text while in Databases

Click the Find Text button while you are searching databases to see if the library carries a title. If it is available electronically, you can link to the article. If you do not see any links to the e-version, click the UT Catalogs link, which will run a search in our catalog and let you know if we own the title in print.

6. E-Journals List

The e-journals list now includes listings for all of the titles that we have access to through full text databases such as Academic Search Premier, Factiva, & Lexis-Nexis. The list also includes Open Access titles and Open Access backfiles such as those in PubMed Centeral and DOAJ. If you know of an open access title, please let us know and we will add it. Speaking of Open Access, we are members of BioMed Central. If you would like more information on choosing an open access publisher, please let us know.

5. Citation Linker

Using the citation linker, you can quickly link to a menu which will display electronic access and give you a link to run an automatic catalog search. Citation Linker gives you the menu that you would get if you were searching in a database and clicked the Find Text button.

4. Open URL Generator

This is exactly like the Citation Linker, except it allows you to get a url which you can then e-mail to others or post on your website or Black Board page. (note: the recipient would have to have access through his/her institution)
1. Enter relevant citation information into the OpenURL Generator.
Required Fields: Journal Title and/or ISSN, Volume, Year, and Starting Page.
2. Select "View OpenURL" in lower left corner of form.
3. Verify that the menu to be displayed presents the full-text option that you wish to share by clicking "Click here to connect to the SFX server"
4. Copy and paste OpenURL.

3. Library News now offered with RSS

The Libraries now have several news sites: General Library News, Sci-Tech News, Electronic Resources News, and Scholarly Communication News. Special Note: On SciTech News, I post a list of new articles by UT Science Faculty that I receive through weekly Web of Science alerts.
One great thing about our new News pages is that they offer RSS (Real Simple Syndication). RSS is an easy way to get updates automatically sent to you without having to revisit a page over and over to see if new content has been posted. For more information on subscribing to our News.

2. Instruction

Do you give your students assignments that include writing a paper or using information resources? We would be happy to tailor a session for your class-- as broad as a library orientation, or a narrow as particular database. We can visit your class or hold the session in the library, whichever you prefer.

1. Your Librarian
Have questions about library services, journal access, purchases, or student instruction? Please feel free to contact us with any questions, concerns or suggestions about the Library. We are here to support your teaching and research.
