NSF Limits Grant Applications

Colleges Worry About NSF Limits on Numbers of Grant Applications
By JEFFREY BRAINARD

snip..
"Increasingly, for some types of grant competitions, the agency is limiting the number of applications that any one institution can submit, often to one or two. That means that universities, and especially large colleges that have several researchers interested in some grants competitions, are required to do their own form of peer review in house to decide which of several proposals to submit."

Supporters of the privatization language say that it would stop USGS from competing with the private sector, but many environmental managers fear that important data collection efforts would be weakened.

National Academies unveil resources to teach about Evolution

National Academies Unveil Evolution Web Page
June 13 -- The National Academies have designed a new Web page to allow easy access to books, position statements, and additional resources on evolution education and research. Evolution is one of science's most robust theories, and the National Academies have long supported the position that evolution should be taught as a central element in any science education program. Over the past several years, there has been a growing movement around the country to include non-scientifically based "alternatives" in science courses. Currently there are challenges to the teaching of evolution in some 40 states or local school districts.
