AIP Launches Biomicrofluidics

AIP Launches Biomicrofluidics -
A New Interdisciplinary, Open Access Journal

Melville, NY, November 9, 2006 - The American Institute of Physics (AIP)
announced today that it has launched a new online journal,
Biomicrofluidics (http://bmf.aip.org), which provides a novel forum for
researchers from diverse fields, including engineering, physics,
materials science, chemistry, and biology. Biomicrofluidics is an open
access journal that distributes articles immediately to all scientists
and engineers worldwide with no access charge.

As an electronic-only journal with rapid publication time,
Biomicrofluidics is responsive to the fast-paced developments occurring
in this field. The journal primarily focuses on original research
articles, augmenting these with special sections and issues that help
elucidate and define specific challenges unique to the field. Authors
are encouraged to submit manuscripts to Biomicrofluidics at
http://bmf.peerx-press.org.

The journal is edited by Dr. Hsueh-Chia Chang, Bayer Professor of
Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering and Director of the Center for
Microfluidics and Medical Diagnostics at the University of Notre Dame.
Dr. Chang has done extensive work on biological applications of
microfluidics and nanotechnology, and on pattern-formation dynamics
driven by hydrodynamic and electrochemical, biological, thermal, and
reaction-diffusion instabilities.

"With rapid turnaround and wide circulation, we hope to promote
interaction among the large but scattered microfluidic research
communities across the globe," said Hsueh-Chia Chang, Editor of
Biomicrofluidics. "It is our hope that Biomicrofluidics will serve this
growing community by offering a common link and a communication conduit
among the various scientific and engineering disciplines that
participate in this exciting new field."

Organized into four issues per year, Biomicrofluidics will publish each
article online in final citable form as soon as it is available. The
journal will cover topics such as DNA and molecular manipulation,
microfluidics and nanofluidics, wetting and nano-rheology, drop and
digitated platform, electrokinetics and magneto-hydrodynamics, pathogen
and molecular concentration, and separation and sorting devices.

The American Institute of Physics is a not-for-profit corporation with a
mission to advance and diffuse the knowledge of physics and related
fields of science and engineering and its applications to human welfare.
Publishing and publishing services are part of that mission. Today, in
addition to publishing magazines and journals, AIP provides composition,
printing, fulfillment, marketing, and other services to science and
engineering publishers. AIP also fulfills its mandate by operating

PLoS Debuts with 13.9 Impact Factor

San Francisco, CA; June 27, 2005 - The open-access journal PLoS Biology has been assessed by Thomson ISI to have an impact factor of 13.9*, which places PLoS Biology among the most highly cited journals in the life sciences. This is an outstanding statistic for a journal less than two years old, from a new publisher promoting a new business model that supports open access to the scientific and medical literature.

An impact factor of 13.9 places PLoS Biology above such established journals as EMBO Journal, Current Biology, and the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. In fact, in ISI's category of general biology journals, PLoS Biology is ranked number 1.

Optics Express Partners with SPARC

Optics Express, published by the Optical Society of America has been selected as a SPARC "Leading Edge" partner. Ranked in the top ten optics journals by ISI, Optics Express was among the first peer-reviewed open-access journals in the marketplace and has played an increasingly important role for OSA since the journal’s founding in 1997.

SPARC reports that from the beginning, OSA designed Optics Express to be an “author-centric” journal. Its online peer-review process and rapid turnaround from submission to publication -- averaging 47 days -- were groundbreaking steps. After an examination of new technologies and market needs, OSA elected to make access to articles free and recover costs through a publication fee. This has proven not to be a barrier to submission, and the journal never refuses a worthy article because the author cannot afford the fees. By 2002, Optics Express broke even, with revenue covering staffing, overhead and development costs, and this year, OSA will generate a modest net surplus. Optics Express receives its total revenue from publication charges, which are $450 for articles six pages and under, and $800 for articles over six pages.

The Optical Society of America (OSA) brings together an international network of the industry’s preeminent optics and photonics scientists, engineers, educators, technicians and business leaders. Representing more than 15,000 members from approximately 100 different countries, OSA promotes the worldwide generation, application and dissemination of optics and photonics knowledge through its meetings, events and journals. Since its founding in 1916, OSA member benefits, programming, publications, products and services have set the industry’s standard of excellence.

SPARC and SPARC Europe are initiatives of universities, research libraries, and library organizations that support increased competition in scholarly publishing. SPARC publishing partnerships and educational activities encourage expanded dissemination of research and reduced financial pressure on libraries. Worldwide membership currently includes over 300 institutions and organizations.

New Open Access Journal

Public Library of Science (PLoS) Medicine

May 5, 2004, San Francisco -- New discoveries about human health and
disease will be made freely and immediately available to anyone in the
world with an Internet connection -- from physicians and researchers to
patients and policy makers -- in a new open-access medical journal, PLoS
Medicine
, to be launched in Autumn, 2004.

"Thanks to the Internet and new strategies for financing publication
costs, it is now possible to share the results of medical research with
anyone, anywhere, who could benefit from it. How could we not do it?"
argued Dr. Harold E. Varmus, Nobel laureate, former National Institutes
of Health Director, and one of the co-founders of the Public Library of
Science [PLoS].

PLoS, a non-profit organization whose mission is to make reliable
scientific and medical literature a public resource, formally announced
today that it will publish PLoS Medicine,an open-access, international,
general medical journal, beginning this fall. A call for papers has been
issued, indicating that the journal is now accepting submissions.

PLoS Medicine will publish important peer-reviewed advances in all areas
of medical research, including epidemiology and public health, together
with summaries of all research articles written for non-specialists and
features about international developments in medicine, controversial
medical topics, neglected diseases, and other health-related subjects. All
content in the journal will be freely available online and allowed to be
reproduced worldwide for teaching, promoting awareness of new discoveries,
and other purposes.

The prospect of an open-access alternative to the existing
subscription-based prestigious medical journals has been welcomed by many
in the health research and advocacy worlds. Already more than 75
physicians and researchers have been recruited to the editorial board of
PLoS Medicine, ranging from an AIDS physician in Rwanda to the leader of a
gene therapy unit in Paris to a cardiologist in Salt Lake City.

PLoS was founded in 2000 by Dr. Varmus and colleagues Patrick O. Brown of
Stanford University and Michael B. Eisen of Lawrence BerkeleyLaboratory
and the University of California, Berkeley. Last October,=20 the
organization launched its first open-access journal of peer-reviewed
scientific research, PLoS Biology, whose content has been favorably
reviewed by the New York Times, Le Monde, and countless other media
outlets around the world.

"The case for open access to medical research is even stronger than it is
for basic research in biology. The National Institutes of Health in
theUnited States alone spends over $28 billion on biomedical research.
Everyone in the country -- and around the world -- should have access to
the results of those studies," commented Joseph L. Goldstein, a member of
the PLoS Medicine editorial board and Nobel Prize winner in Medicine based
at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas.

PLoS Medicine will be overseen by PLoS Senior Editors Barbara Cohen,
former editor of Nature Genetics and former executive editor of the
Journal of Clinical Investigation, and Virginia Barbour, a physician and
haematologist and former executive editor of the Lancet. Working closely
with members of the editorial board and in consultation with the wider
medical and health research community, they will develop an open-access
forum for important studies and for discussion of medical research and
practice in the broader context of global health and social
responsibility.
