New Laptops

laptops.jpgNow available for checkout in the music library are two Macintosh laptops and three PC laptops. Computers may be checked out by any student for four hours at a time. Renewals are allowed as long as no other students are waiting. Laptops may be taken out of the library, and must be returned to the circulation desk in the music library. UT Grad Trains, Performs among Opera's Best

Kristina Dean on the ATMore than 650 wanted to sing, but only 28 got the nod. UT graduate William Compton was one of them. What inspired such spirited competition? The opportunity to perform for the summer at the renowned Glimmerglass Opera in Cooperstown, N.Y. Compton '04, a tenor, earned a slot in the opera's Young American Artists program, which offers performance and study opportunities for some of the best early-career talent in the world of opera. Glimmerglass presents 43 productions of four operas during its annual festival season in July and August.

Fall Course Reserves

Select "Course Reserves" under Search Options on the right to search for your course reserves. Online reserve items may be accessed directly from the catalog by clicking the f-tn-link.jpg image next to the URL. Other reserve items may be obtained by bringing the call number of the item to the Music Library Circulation Desk. Welcome Back!

Another semester is starting, but are you aware of all the resources that the Music Library offers?

Our Music Databases cover a wide range of musical genres and areas. They can assist you in finding articles, books, scores, music available for purchase as well as provide you with music to listen online. Be sure to check out all four of our audio streaming databases. See "how to listen online" for instruction sheets on using each of the audio databases.

The Music Library also provides various Indexes for your assistance. The UT Song Index is a valuable resource for locating vocal works within song anthologies owned by the UT Music Library. Additionally, the Analysis Index includes descriptions and analyses of compositions in books owned by the UT Music Library.

Subject Guides on various topics provide research assistance and quick help even when a music librarian is not available. Be sure to check out other Help and Tutorial topics to further assist your research needs.

*The music library will be open on non-home game, non-holiday weekends. Open Saturdays for fall semester are as follows: 8/25, 9/1, 9/15, 9/29, 10/13, 10/20, 12/1, 12/8.

Edward Zambara

In Memoriam

--- Edward Zambara, a former voice teacher in the UT School of Music and the founding director of the Knoxville Opera, died Aug 7 from injuries sustained in a fall at his home. One of the most sought-after voice teachers in the United States and a mentor to many opera singers, Zambara was 81. He was a resident of Brookline, Mass., and was teaching at Boston's New England Conservatory of Music at the time of his death. In 1952, Zambara joined the UT music faculty. He went to the University of Oregon in 1958 but returned to Knoxville in 1961, where he served as chairman of UT's voice department until 1981. In 1980, he received the Tennessee Governor's Award in the Arts. Zambara was buried Friday in Boston.

This source book contains information relating to various types of solo tuba music, methods and studies, orchestral excerpts, and a discography of tuba music. Each entry contains composer, title, instrumentation, performer level, and general notes about the piece. There are also addresses of recording companies, publishers and composers.
