Subject: Views on Growth of Knoxville Campus
Many of you have read the article published on Friday in the Knoxville News Sentinel regarding the size of the campus. I felt it was important to communicate to you my views on this matter. Please feel free to distribute them to faculty and staff in your units:
The Knoxville campus can grow and probably should grow. As President Petersen points out, the flagship campus of the University of Tennessee should act like its peer institutions in other states and educate a similar percentage of the population.
Before it can begin to grow, however, the campus requires resources that will bring it to the level of its peer institutions. Right now Knoxville lags significantly in such areas as faculty and staff compensation, student support services, and graduate student stipends. Once its current needs are met with additional resources, the Knoxville campus can begin to contemplate increases in its student body.
The citizens of Tennessee deserve a great university. A great university is created not merely by admitting and graduating more applicants, but by providing a quality education for its students. A quality education, however, can be secured only with adequate resources.
