Map Services Reopen in Hodges Library
A newly configured Map Services area opens in the John C. Hodges Library on Wednesday, January 9. The ground floor space, which was used as a computer lab prior to the expansion of the Commons on the 2nd floor of Hodges, now houses a diverse collection of books, atlases, globes, digital resources, geographic software, and over 300,000 sheet maps.
We invite you to visit the Hodges Map Services area and take advantage of the varied resources that support research, teaching, and the every day need for map and geographic information. Services and resources are available onsite to the general public as well as to UT students and staff. Materials are available for checkout to UT students and staff and UT-affiliated borrowers.
Map collections and services were previously located in the basement of the James D. Hoskins Library. The core collection of topographic and geologic maps received through the federal depository program were maintained by the university geography department from the 1940s until the University Libraries assumed the collection in 1989. In addition to sheet maps and other materials, today's Map Services features computers, Geographic Information System (GIS) software, GPS equipment, and expert staff who are available to help users access digital geospatial data.
Visit our Map Services website (www.lib.utk.edu/cic) for more information.

Map Library Is On The Move
The move is on! Relocation of the Map Library began today.

The Map Library will reopen in January. In the meantime, please direct your geographic questions to any of our reference desks. Materials charged out from the Map Library may be returned to the circulation desk at Hodges Library.
Thanks for your patience. We are excited to have these geographic materials and the expertise of our Map Library staff closer to the heart of campus.

Construction plans for Commons shuffles services
The Commons will undergo major renovations this summer, and its many services will relocate until the project is finished. (Check out our podcast.)
"While the construction will cause services to move for the short term, I think the long term results will be more beneficial to everyone who uses the Commons," Barbara Dewey, Dean of Libraries, said.
At midnight on May 8, the Commons, rooms 220 and 235 in Hodges Library, will close. The Summer Commons will reopen on May 14 at 7:30 a.m. in the Media Center of Hodges.
The Summer Commons will have computer workstations and printers, photocopiers, and laptop and equipment checkout. The DART machine will also be located in the Summer Commons.
Computers will also be available in the Reference and Documents, Microforms and Periodicals room on the first floor of Hodges Library.
Before the Summer Commons opens, May 9-13, loaner laptops will be available for checkout at the Melrose circulation desk.
The Summer Commons will be open from 7:30a.m. through midnight Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-midnight on Saturday and noon to midnight on Sunday. For more information about hours, please visit www.lib.utk.edu/hours.
The practice presentation room will be relocated to room 251, just outside the Media Center.
Reference services will be located in the Reference Room on the first floor of Hodges. The Stat Lab will also provide office hours in the Reference Room. The Writing Center will only offer hours in room 212 of HSS during the summer, but will resume Commons hours in the fall semester.
OIT Help Desk services, including password resets, and student computer repair, will move to rooms 103 and 104 in Aconda Court during the construction. Call 974-9900. Their summer hours will be 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. Monday-Friday.

Pardon us. April is moving time at Hodges Library.

More moving and some construction will be underway in Hodges this summer to prepare for the larger Commons facilities, which are set to open during the Fall 2006 semester.
Please excuse our mess as we work to bring you a better library.

Trailblazers: Exhibit of Photographs of the Early Years of the Great Smoky Mountain Park
The sixth floor of Hodges Library on the University of Tennessee campus is the new home for an exhibit of historical photographs--Trailblazers: Jim Thompson and Albert "Dutch" Roth Photographs of the Early Years of the Great Smoky Mountain Park.
Jim Thompson and Albert "Dutch" Roth were two men whose participation in the development of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park coincided with their love of photography. This outstanding photographic collection documents the early land conservation movement, with images of such
luminaries as David Chapman, who had a Smokies mountain named for him, and Harvey Broome, founding member of the Wilderness Society. The images include many subjects from the 1920s to the 1950s, including: logging, road building, the creation of the Appalachian Trail, the founding of the Smoky Mountain Hiking Club, and of course the majesty and beauty of the Smokies.
Curated by Bill Britten, head of Library Technology Services, the exhibit is a fortunate by-product of a project by the University of Tennesse Libraries to digitize these historical photographs. The result, which is a collection of stunning images, lovingly restored and presented in a manner that exceeds what Thompson or Roth could have imagined, shows how a modern digital project can come full
circle and restore old photographs as both art and historical statement.
Sincere gratitude is extended to the following for permission to use the images: the family of Albert "Dutch" Roth, Ed Thompson and Thompson Photo Products, the McClung Historical Collection of Knox
County Public Library, and the Great Smoky Mountains Regional Project, UT Libraries.

The Commons Adds a Practice Presentation Room
The Commons, 235 Hodges Library, has designated a group room to be a Practice Presentation Room. UT students, faculty, and staff can use a laptop and SMARTBOARD with an interactive screen to project PowerPoint slides and practice making presentations in a realistic environment.
Reservations may be placed up to two weeks in advance. To make a reservation for using the room, simply fill out the form at http://web.utk.edu/~start5/commons/Reservation.htm. A brief training session is required for first-time users.
Students from the START program will provide assistance with the presentation equipment. (START--Student Technology Assistants for Research and Teaching--is an Innovative Technology Center-sponsored program that employs technology-savvy students to assist others in using technology to enhance instruction.)
The Commons, a collaboration between the UT Libraries and the Office of Information Technology (OIT), brings together some of the most frequently used library and technology resources in a single location, open around the clock for much of the week.
The Commons offers more than forty computers with over sixty different software packages, as well as loaner laptops, scanners, and laser printing capabilities. Available services include reference assistance, computer support, statistical consulting, and book retrieval during late-night hours when the libraries' other floors are closed.

Former Juvenile Collection moves from Reserve to third floor

Amelia Bedelia, Babar, Paddington Bear and Dr. Seuss have a new home in Hodges Library. The Children's and Young Adult Collection, formerly known as the Juvenile Collection, is now located in the northwest corner of the third floor.
The Children's and Young Adult Collection has approximately 20,000 titles, with about 2/3 fiction and 1/3 non-fiction. The loan period for books in this collection has also been extended, from seven days to 28 days.
The Children's and Young Adult Collection at the UT Libraries supplements the university's Center for Children's and Young Adult Literature. The center is dedicated to promoting the use of literature in the education and lives of children and young adults. The center also provides an outreach program that serves the community with both educational workshops and entertaining events.

UT Libraries Changes with the Times
Libraries to Close Duplication Unit
When the Duplication Unit first opened at Hodges Library, there was sometimes a line out the door of patrons and staff waiting to use the machines.
"There were rails that wound from the entrance door to the wall, and people would line up, like you do at the movies," Jim Everett, Duplication Supervisor, said. "And then it wasn't just photocopies, we duplicated audio cassettes for Special Collections and the Music Library. We were very busy. But changes in technology have changed the nature of our work," Everett, who has worked in Duplication for 18 years, continued.
At the end of the day on Friday, May 6, Duplication will close its doors to the public permanently. While the Libraries will still provide photocopy machines in Reference, Reserve, Periodicals, and on each stack floor, high-end features such as collating and stapling will no longer be offered.
Anyone who needs help with a copy machine, to buy a copy card, or to use a transfer voucher to make copies should go to the Circulation desk for assistance.
With the increase of electronic resources and e-reserves, more library patrons are printing, rather than copying, the materials they need. As fewer patrons make fewer copies, it is no longer cost-effective for the Libraries to maintain Duplication in its current form. Staff who currently work in Duplication will be reassigned to other areas of the library that have increased demand, such as digital production.

One Stop at the Library -- From Initial Research to Finished Product
More of the software students need is now available on library workstations. Microsoft Office has been added to all library computers with NetID access.
Everything students need to complete an assignment, from initial research to finished product, is readily available in the library. Reference tools, digital resources, network access -- and now students' favorite software applications -- are all available on one desktop.
After students complete their research, they can type a term paper in Word, organize and analyze data in Excel, and design a classroom presentation in Powerpoint without leaving the library.
An additional 165 workstations in the Hodges, Map, and Music libraries are now configured with Microsoft Office 2003 Pro. Workstations at the Agriculture & Veterinary Medicine Library (where there is less access to computer labs than on the main campus) have included Microsoft Office for some time, and it has been very popular with students.
Helping students integrate these applications into a seamless workflow is just one more way the UT Libraries support the needs of the 21st century student.

Circulation receives much-needed desk-lift
New desk to serve patrons better with accessibility, approachability
After weeks of construction and remodeling, the new Circulation desk is now complete and ready to better serve patrons.
The two-level desk now accommodates disabled patrons with ease, as the previous desk set up was not wheelchair-accessible.
"We were always concerned that the original desk was not friendly to our patrons with disabilities," GiGi Bayne, Circulation staff member, said. "It was awkward to use, and we like to give all of our patrons the same high quality of service."
Another benefit to the new design is the increased lighting, which makes the desk and staff easier to see and more approachable.
While the next-generation desk assists patrons better, it also serves the Circulation staff better. The open design gives staff members more maneuvering room and two back-up desks allow more staff to assist patrons if things get busy.
"We've heard nothing but positive feedback from staff and patrons," Bayne said. "This really makes it easier for patrons to have access to our services."

DART Machine Installed at Hodges, Ag-Vet Med Libraries
Students can now add funds to their All-Star accounts with ease
Purchasing frustrations will ease considerably with the installation of two new DART machines at John C. Hodges and Pendergrass Agriculture Veterinary Medicine Libraries.
Debit Access Retail Terminals, or DART, machines allow students to make cash deposits to their All-Star accounts. These accounds can be used for Pay-for-Print or for purchases at Starbucks or the Bookstore. AllStar monies can also be at the University Center, laundry services in University Housing, campus vending machines and to pay for a parking lot hang-tag or parking citations.
"We are very pleased to be able to provide this convenient service to students, faculty, and staff," Jill Keally, Assistant Dean of Libraries, said. "The Cyber Cafe has very late hours, and the Ag-Vet Med Library provides a central location for the machine on the Ag campus."
Pay-for-Print deducts 2 cents per image from a student’s All-Star account, and students can also add money via the Volcard Web page, with their credit cards, over the phone at (865) 974-3430 with credit card information, or in person at the Volcard Office at 472 South Stadium Hall. DART machines only accept $1, $5 and $10 bills.
In Hodges Library, the DART machine is located in the Cyber Cafe, next to Starbucks; the machine in the Ag-Vet Med Library is the only one servicing the Ag campus. There are 14 other DART machines located on campus and in off-campus apartment residences.
