Writers in the Library features Poetry and Chocolate with Marilyn Kallet
Kallet will read from Last Love Poems of Paul Eluard and selections from her own work
Marilyn Kallet will read poems of surrealist French poet Paul Eluard and selections from her own work on Monday, February 12 at 7 p.m. A reception, featuring chocolate, will be held immediately after the reading. The event is free and open to the public.
Kallet's translation of Eluard's works, the Last Love Poems of Paul Eluard, was first published by Louisiana State University Press in 1980. Black Widow Press published a revised and updated edition of the work in 2006.
Kallet is the author of eleven books, including poetry, translations, anthologies and criticism. Her poems have appeared in hundreds of literary magazines. She has won the Tennessee Arts Commission Literary in Poetry, and was named Outstanding Woman in the Arts by the Knoxville YWCA in 2000. Kallet directed the creative writing program at UT for seventeen years and now holds the Hodges Chair for Distinguished Teaching in English.
The reading will be held in the Lindsay Young Auditorium of Hodges Library. The reception, sponsored by the UT English Department, will follow immediately after the reading in the Mary E. Greer Room on the second floor of Hodges Library, near the Melrose entrance.

UT Libraries' history recorded in latest Library Development Review
The 2005-2006 Library Development Review is now available. This year's issue chronicles the history of the libraries and helps celebrate some amazing milestones--the 20th anniversary of the remodeled John C. Hodges Library, the 75th anniversary of the James D. Hoskins Library opening--as well as many other anniversaries. From a few hundred volumes available to the students of Blount College in 1794, to putting the first bar codes on books in 1983, to opening the Commons in 2005, the issue tells the University of Tennessee Libraries' storied past. Take a (new) seat!
Hodges Library features Commons, Media Center updates
The Commons and Media Center in Hodges Library have some new changes to kick off the New Year.
In the Commons, there are 18 new desktop computers as well as new chairs, desks and lighting. In Commons 220, new artwork is on the walls, thanks to a contribution from the Chancellor's Office.
Also new in the Commons is a new SMART Sympodium for the Practice Presentation Room, an interactive SMART board for the Martha L. King group study room, and a mobile codec videoconferencing system that can be used in either room.

The Media Center has also made changes, providing table-seating near its entrance. The area is designed for hands-on use of Media Center equipment.

UT Libraries CLOSED in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
The University of Tennessee Libraries will be closed Monday, January 15 in honor of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday. Hodges Library will close at 10 p.m. on Sunday, January 14 and will reopen on Tuesday, January 16 at 7:30 a.m.
Branch libraries will also be closed in observance of the holiday--please contact them regarding opening times on January 16.

UT Libraries Purchase Major German Language Collection from Corvey Libary
University of Tennessee is the only North American library to own this collection
The University of Tennessee Libraries is pleased to announce the acquisition of a major German language collection: Fürstliche Bibliothek Corvey--Sachliteratur, a microfiche facsimile edition of 1,084 non-fiction titles from the Princely Library at Corvey. The Corvey Library is one of the most important private libraries in Germany and considered to be an outstanding monument of European book culture. The Library's collection of 73,000 volumes dates from the late 18th and 19th centuries, and consists of belles lettres and non-fiction in German, French, and English. The non-fiction titles draw primarily on the fields of history and geography, but also reflect the natural sciences, economics, philosophy and theology.
The collection was purchased at the request of the UT German Studies faculty in the summer of 2006 for $26,298.00. The purchase was funded by the Lindsay Young Library Endowment, and supports the interdisciplinary focus of the 2006-07 research seminar on modern Germany and Central Europe under the auspices of the University of Tennessee Humanities Initiative. As the only North American library that owns this collection, UT Libraries presents an abundant source of otherwise unavailable resources for all who study the interdisciplinary field of German Studies in the context of the 18th and 19th centuries.
Fürstliche Bibliothek Corvey--Sachliteratur is available for use in the Documents and Microforms area on the first floor of UT's Hodges Library. The collection will be featured at the first German research seminar session of the spring semester on Wednesday, January 17, 2007. The program will begin at 4:00 p.m. in the Faculty Lounge, Room 258, on the second floor of Hodges Library.

Student Art in the Library Features New Exhibit
The Spring 2007 Student Art in the Library Juried Exhibition is on view in the Hodges Library first floor reference room until May. The exhibit features 14 original works of art by UT students. The contest was open to all undergraduate and graduate students currently enrolled at The University of Tennessee, Knoxville. The Student Art in the Library Committee made its selections from over 70 submissions.

Writers in the Library Features Poet Dennis Sampson
Sampson is UT Department of English Writer in Residence for Spring 2007
Poet and UT English Department writer-in-residence Dennis Sampson will help the UT Libraries ring in the new year by kicking off the 2007 Writers in the Library series on January 29. The performance will begin at 7 p.m. in the Lindsay Young Auditorium of Hodges Library and is free and open to the public.
Sampson was born and raised in South Dakota. His five volumes of poetry include The Double Genesis, Forgiveness, Constant Longing, Needlegrass, and For my Father Falling Asleep at Saint Mary's Hospital. The recipient of grants from The Virginia Council on the Arts and The North Carolina Arts Council, Sampson's poems have appeared in such magazines as The American Scholar, The Ohio Review, The Hudson Review and many others. He has taught as Writer-in-Residence at Sweet Briar College in Virginia, and as the Visiting Poet in the M.F.A Program in Creative Writing at UNC Wilmington. Since 2000 he has been on the faculty at Wake Forest University.

An 1886 Trip to the Smokies
Photograph collection exhibits Victorian-era Smokies images
The Great Smoky Mountains Regional Project is pleased to announce the availability of the William Cox Cochran Great Smoky Mountains Photographic Collection. Cochran, an Ohio lawyer and trustee of Oberlin College, captured the 89 images in this collection while on a trip to East Tennessee in August 1886.
The photographs consist largely of images of people and landmarks in and around what is now known as the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The photographic images were donated by Miss Mary Rudd Cochran, daughter of W.C. Cochran, to the University of Tennessee Libraries in 1959.
