New Books @ the Library: The virtues of ignorance : complexity, sustainability, and the limits of knowledge

"Demonstrating that knowledge-based worldviews are more dangerous than useful, The Virtues of Ignorance looks closely at the relationship between the land and the future generations who will depend on it. The authors argue that we can never improve upon nature but that we can, by putting this new perspective to work in our professional and personal lives, live sustainably on Earth."

The Great Backyard Bird Count

The Great Backyard Bird Count, a joint project between the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and the Audubon Society, is a nationwide citizen science* project happening Feburary 15-18, 2008. Participants simply count the number and kinds of birds they see for as little as 15 minutes during the Bird Count and submit an online checklist. Scientists compile the data to gain information on bird populations in winter. All ages and birding skill levels are welcome to participate in this project. Information can be found at: The Great Backyard Bird Count

*Citizen science projects are those that involve non-scientists to collect scientific data on such varied topics as water quality, variable star observations, and biodiversity. Scientists then analyze the data, allowing them to make discoveries that would be impossible to observe with only a small team of scientists.

UTK's Inclement Weather Policy

The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, will remain open except in the most severe weather conditions.

* The Chancellor may officially close or suspend selected activities of the University because of extreme weather conditions. When a decision to close is reached, campus and local radio and TV stations will be notified so that appropriate announcements may be made.

* If the University is officially closed, certain essential activities such as food services, facilities services, police, steam plant, health service, and telephone services will continue to operate. Some facilities such as the Library and University Center will, if possible, continue to function as a service to students and faculty. When the University is officially closed, its policy of Days of Administrative Closing will apply for staff exempt and staff nonexempt employees.

* In the event of inclement weather when the University remains open, all faculty, administrators and staff will be expected to make every reasonable effort to maintain their regular work schedules, but are advised to avoid undue risks in traveling. Employees who anticipate arriving late or not arriving at work at all should notify their immediate supervisors. Employees have the option of charging their time off to annual leave or leave without pay; or, with approval, they may make up their lost work hours.

*Students will be responsible for any academic work they miss due to absences caused by severe weather conditions. It is the individual student's responsibility to take the initiative to make up any missed class work, and it is the instructors' responsibility to provide a reasonable opportunity for students to complete assignments or examinations missed due to such absences.

Compendium in PubMed July 2007---

The Compendium, formerly titled Compendium on Continuing Education for the Veterinary Practitioner,
has been accepted by the National Library of Medicine (NLM) for indexing in PubMed from July 2007 forward.
Veterinary librarians in Missouri and Washington State have worked tirelessly to keep this omission
before the committee at NLM that evaluates journals for indexing.

Issues prior to July 2007 will not be indexed in PubMed unless the publisher, Veterinary Learning Systems or VLS sends the information to the PubMed indexing section. Veterinary librarians have urged the publisher to do so.

If you would like to send a request to the publisher to provide PubMed with the electronic records needed
for indexing, here is the contact info.: EDITORIAL/PRODUCTION/CIRCULATION

Pendergrass Library is del.icio.us!

Del.icio.us is a social bookmarking website that allows users to share their favorite links with others. It also allows you to access your favorite bookmarks from anywhere, not just your home or work computer!

Pendergrass Library now has a del.icio.us account. We've bookmarked our webpages and subject guide webpages for the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources and the College of Veterinary Medicine. We are in the process of adding more helpful links everyday. If you already have a del.icio.us account, add UTK_Pendergrass_Library to your network. This will allow you to see all of our links! Searching del.icio.us for tags such as "agriculture" will also bring up our links as well as those entered in by other people and schools that fall under that category.

If you'd like to sign up for a del.icio.us account or learn more about the service, contact Allison Scripa at ascripa@utk.edu.

VolSpace--Your Files Available Anywhere You Are!

Have you ever forgotten your jump drive when you needed to save a paper? Or maybe experienced a technological "failure" that left you without your work? The University offers a FREE tool to counter these issues.

VolSpace is a service offered by OIT (Office of Information Technology) to everyone with a UNIX account. It offers space on their server for storing files or creating personal Web pages. There are even training videos available to teach you how to use your VolSpace. Show Me!

One use of VolSpace is to make save copies of your work in case you forget your jump drive, or you can use it instead of a jump drive for files that you need access to from various computers. Copies put in your VolSpace will be available wherever you are!

The UT Libraries Studio has directions on how to use VolSpace for saving and storing work.

Bald Eagle Flies off the Endangered List

Today the bald eagle is expected to be removed from the endangered species list.
In 1940 Congress noted the decline of the national bird, passing the Bald Eagle Protection Act making it illegal to harm or sell bald eagles with out a permit. Bald eagles were added to the Endangered Species list in 1967 preceding the Endangered Species Act (ESA), which passed in 1973. Widespread use of DDT following World War II contaminated the fish, the primary food source for the eagle, and weakened their egg shells. The use of DDT was banned in 1972 following the release of Silent Spring by Rachel Carson. (available @ AgVet Library: SB951 .C47).
The US Fish and Wildlife Service offers species sheets online. Click here for the bald eagle information sheet.
Visit EnvironmentalDefence.org for more information on endangered species.

What is ABLE and Why Can't I Erase the White Boards in the Study Rooms

Three to four times a semester, the study rooms in the AG-VET MED Library are reserved for veterinary students engaged in week-long problem-based learning (a.k.a. ABLE in the UT CVM) sessions on cases commonly seen in veterinary practice, as a supplement to facts-based learning.

Each ABLE group is assigned a study room. The white boards in the study rooms record learning issues and other important case-related information. If the white boards are erased during the week it is a significant setback for the students working in that group.

During ABLE weeks: DO NOT ERASE the white boards in the study rooms. Unoccupied rooms may be used by non-veterinary students during the week as long as the white boards are untouched. Check at the service desk if in you have questions.

Wetlands in Agricultural Landscapes

"Wetlands in Agricultural Landscapes" (http://www.nal.usda.gov/wqic/ceap/ceap05.shtml) is one in a multi-volume set developed by the Water Quality Information Center at the National Agricultural Library in support of the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Conservation Effects Assessment Project (CEAP).

This bibliography highlights research findings in two main areas: (1) the effect of conservation practices and other agricultural activities on wetlands, and (2) the environmental effects of wetlands as conservation practices, including constructing and restoring wetlands. It will also facilitate the identification of knowledge gaps regarding effects of conservation practices on ecosystem services provided by wetlands in agricultural landscapes, and will help identify where research is needed.

Publishing option: PLoS Public Library of Science

Public Library of Science (PLoS) is a nonprofit organization of scientists and physicians committed to making the world's scientific and medical literature a freely available public resource. All PLoS activities are guided by core principles.

There are a number of ways to stay connected to news and journals of the PLoS.

ANYONE AT UT GETS A 40% DISCOUNT ON THE COSTS TO PUBLISH IN PLoS JOURNALS. UT IS AN INSTITUTIONAL MEMBER OF PLoS. FOR MORE INFORMATION SEE THE MEMBERS' PAGE

A list of articles by faculty at UT who have published in PLoS is available.

Harold Varmus, former head of NIH, is one of the three co-founders of PLoS. Richard Smith, former editor, British Medical Journal, is on the board of directors. An editorial by Richard Smith, titled "Give it to me straight, doc: Why shouldn't the public have access to to medical research? They're paying for it." was published in the The Guardian on June 30th, 2006.

Publish in PLoS at 40% off Publication Fees

PLos is increasing the fees charged to authors, but all UT authors are entitled to a 40% discount because UT is an
institutional member.

The Public Library of Science (PLoS), an open access publisher, is raising the publication fees charged to authors
".....from $1,500 for PLoS's flagship journals (PLoS Biology and PLoS Medicine) to $2,500, and to $2,000 for its other journals.... " according to Peter Suber's blog on 6/20 on Open Access News, which exerpted an article by David Secko, Author fee spikes at PLoS, TheScientist, June 19, 2006.

Please remember that UT is an institutional member, and as such, authors recieve a 40% discount on publishing costs.

Equine Veterinary Journal~electronic~ now available

The Equine Veteirnary Journal is available in electronic format. As of 6/19 it is only accessible through
the online catalog. It will be on the ejournals list soon.

A note on the delay in getting this title electronically: The publisher, EVJ Ltd, in offering EVJ electronically for the first time this year, increased the price by 60%. Typically, publishers charge about 10% more for electronic access for institutions. The individual rates for EVJ increased 5% this year. Please resist and/or protest this kind of differential pricing. Several veterinary librarians and veterinary faculty at WSU and elsewhere contacted EVJ with concerns last November when the price scheme was announced. At UT we finally caved and ordered it. It now costs $308 USD.

SCOPUS-- Elsevier's Answer to Web of Science?

Elsevier has a new offering called SCOPUS (named after a bird)
SCOPUS is under consideration for purchase by UT and was demonstrated by Elsevier marketeers to a group of librarians in Knoxville and Memphis last week. There is a demo on the SCOPUS webpage which is probably similar to what the marketeers presented. One of the claims made for SCOPUS was "It's not about searching, it's about finding."

If you see any ads for SCOPUS or reviews, please forward them to me. If you click on the bird link above it takes you to Wikipedia. There is a link to citation searching, which includes a mention of SCOPUS and Web of Science with a link to an article that evaluates them.

Animal Law: new journal and Vet Clinics article

NEW JOURNAL: A new journal will be available this summer. Below is the text from the message
with the annoucement.

"As the Managing Editor and one of the founders of the Journal of Animal Law
Ethics (JALE), I am thrilled to announce that we are in the final stages
of editing our first issue, which will be printed this May.
The student-editors have worked hard to put together an inaugural
issue with pieces from top scholars in the fields of animal law and
ethics, and we will continue to seek quality submissions from academics
and practitioners from multiple disciplines for subsequent issues
(submission guidelines can be found on the website: www.law.upenn.edu/groups/jale).
JALE, run by students at the University of Pennsylvania Law
School, was formed in the spring of 2005 and incorporated last autumn as a
Pennsylvania nonprofit corporation. We would love to have your support as a subscriber,
and we believe that wide dissemination of JALE will in turn support the
growing acceptance of animal law and ethics as serious topics for debate
and action. Subscription forms and instructions can be found on the JALE
website.
If you are interested in receiving the inaugural issue, or would like to read
more information about JALE, please visit www.law.upenn.edu/groups/jale. Please note that the subscription deadline for the
first volume is April 30, 2006. We will begin
accepting subscriptions for the second volume early this summer. Also, please feel free to e-mail jale@law.upenn.edu with any questions.
Best,
Matthew Olesh
Managing Editor
-- Journal of Animal Law & Ethics University of Pennsylvania Law School 3400 Chestnut Street Philadelphia, PA 19104 jale@law.upenn.edu http://www.law.upenn.edu/groups/jale

VET CLINICS ARTICLE: There is also an article in vet clinics on animal law. This issue has not reached AG-VET MED as of 5/22/06, but should be available soon.
CITATION AND ABSTRACT FROM PUBMED:

1: Vet Clin North Am Small Anim Pract. 2006 Mar;36(2):341-53, vi.

Current trends in animal law and their implications for the veterinary
profession.

Lacroix CA.

Veterinary Business Advisors, Inc., 24 Coddington Road, Whitehouse Station, NJ
08889, USA. clacroix123@earthlink.net

In the last decade, the veterinary profession has experienced many changes,
including the birth of a new area of law known as "animal law," and an increased
scrutiny by the legal community and veterinary state boards. This article
provides a sampling of some of the more challenging issues the profession is
facing in the early part of the 21st century, namely, guardianship versus
ownership, the awarding of non-economic damages in negligence lawsuits, and
challenges in maintaining medical records.

AltWeb page redesigned

The AltWeb page from Johns Hopkins Center for Alternatives to Animal Testing has been redesigned.

According to Allen and Smith, in their article in Animal Welfare, 2005, volume 14, pages 347-359,
"A search of the AltWeb site should be considered mandatory when seeking information on the Three Rs."

Here is the complete text of the paragraph on AltWeb from the article cited above:
"Alternatives to Animal Testing on the Web (AltWeb) is an international project that was launched in 1997. AltWeb has contributed greatly to the dissemination of information on existing databases via the internet. In addition to acting as a clearinghouse of information and news on the Three Rs, it has initiated the development of new resources, such as the Pain Management database (see above). altWeb has also created a 'Humane Endpoints' database in collaboration with FRAME in Nottingham, England. This database is designed to aid investigators in implementing the earliest possible endpoint that is compatible with their research goals, to reduce pain and distress in animals. A search of the AltWeb site should be considered mandatory when seeking information on the Three Rs." (page 349)
