National Farmworkers Awareness Week

From March 30-April 5th, 2008

Farmworker Awareness Week (FAW) is a SAF-called, nation-wide week of action for students and community members to raise awareness about farmworker issues on their campuses and in their communities. Every year FAW takes place during the week of Cesar Chavez's birthday, March 31st, to honor his legacy as a leader of the farmworker movement.

Tsunami Warning System

NOAA's National Weather Service, in collaboration with the California Office of Emergency Services and the Humboldt County Sheriff's office, will conduct a test of the tsunami warning system in coastal Humboldt County, Calif., between 10:15 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. Pacific Daylight Time on Wed., Mar. 26.

NPR Commentary on Life With a Parrot

On March 13, NPR featured Julie Zickefoose, an Appalachian nature artist and writer, on life with Charlie, her Chestnut-Fronted Macaw. Although the piece is humorous, it also addresses the problems inherent in sharing your life with an intelligent, long-lived animal. You can listen to the piece here.

Visit the Encyclopedia of Life

The Encyclopedia of Life is officially up and running! An ambitious project to catalog each of the 1.8 million discovered species on Earth with their own web page, the first species profiles are available for viewing. Profiles include species' descriptions, information about the species' life histories, ecology, taxonomy, and literature references. Images of species are also included on profiles.

25 complete entries are available, as well as about 30,000 partial entries. Visit The Encyclopedia of Life today!
