Public Library of Science (PLoS) is a nonprofit organization of scientists and physicians committed to making the world’s scientific and medical literature a freely available public resource. All PLoS activities are guided by core principles.

Harold Varmus, former head of NIH, is one of the three co-founders of PLoS. Richard Smith, former editor, British Medical Journal, is on the board of directors. An editorial by Richard Smith, titled “Give it to me straight, doc: Why shouldn’t the public have access to to medical research? They’re paying for it.” was published in the The Guardian on June 30th, 2006.
