Newfound Press Information for Authors

Newfound Press invites submissions of book length manuscripts, queries about multimedia presentations, and proposals from editors for Newfound Press to host scholarly journals or other serial works. The Press especially seeks works that incorporate multimedia and other types of innovative presentation. Also of particular interest are works with interdisciplinary approaches and those relevant to Tennessee and the Southeast.

The Press seeks content that meets one or more of the following criteria:

  • Demonstrates scholarly rigor
  • Offers an innovative presentation, particularly involving multimedia
  • Contains content and approach of potential interest across disciplines
  • Reflects regional relevance
  • Merits wide dissemination and preservation, but unlikely to be published by a traditional press because of narrow focus or innovative format

Newfound Press is committed to disseminating peer-reviewed works that may have a limited and/or specialized audience. When manuscripts are received, members of the Editorial Board solicit scholars in appropriate disciplines to conduct peer review.

Works accepted for publication receive processing that adds value to the content by promoting discovery and use. Newfound Press services include consultation, management of the peer review process for one-time publications, presentation design, Web access 24/7, procurement of ISBN and ISSN, application of cataloging/metadata tags according to international standards, marketing, preservation of current and archival files, and collection of use data.

Copyright owners grant Newfound Press non-exclusive rights to disseminate their work in perpetuity. This arrangement means that others may also publish the work and receive permission from the copyright holder to publish or disseminate in other forms. Newfound Press requires authors and editors to include copyright information with a statement of ownership, an invitation to reproduce content under certain conditions, and a warning about possible infringements. See more copyright information.

Editorial Style

Newfound Press uses The Chicago Manual of Style for text and the Public Knowledge Project Open Journal Systems software for journals presentation.

Book-Length Works

Book-length works include monographs and other one-time publications. Newfound Press presentation includes a book cover design and searchable PDF files. One file contains the entire work, and others typically contain sections with individual chapters and front and back matter. Additional files may incorporate multimedia elements. Newfound Press provides copyediting and layout.

Submissions:

  • Manuscripts for review should be in MS Word and accompanied by a letter that describes the work, its significance, the intended audience, and the qualifications of the author. Send materials to the chair of the Newfound Press Editorial Board.
  • Editorial Board members manage the peer review process. See the Newfound Press Manuscript Review form.
  • Once a manuscript is accepted for publication, Newfound Press prepares the content for public access in searchable PDF. Copyright holders sign a permissions form granting the Press non-exclusive rights to publish the content online in perpetuity.

Journals

Newfound Press hosts peer-reviewed journals and other serial publications managed by an editor whose sponsor (e.g. scholarly society, university department) accepts responsibility for the content. Journals are presented through Public Knowledge Project Open Journal Systems software that supports browse and key word searching and multimedia files. OJS presentation features the current issue with a searchable archive. Newfound Press will assist journal editors with web page design. Editors send articles for publication to Newfound Press for posting to the current journal issue.

Submissions:

  • Current and prospective journal editors are invited to discuss with the chair of the Editorial Board the preparation of a proposal for Newfound Press to host the journal.
  • A proposal should include information about the journal scope, sponsor (e.g. scholarly society, university department), editorial staff, peer review process, bibliographic information (e.g. title, ISSN if one exists, frequency), audience, and related journals.
  • Journal editors are invited to consult the Newfound Press Resources for Editors page for more detailed information.

Multimedia Works, Including Conference Proceedings

Innovative approaches to creating and disseminating scholarly and creative work will likely include multimedia. Newfound Press has begun exploring opportunities for publishing multimedia by adding to the PDF files of conference papers content such as audio/video files, scanned images of conference fliers and promotional materials, related presentations, and links to conference presenters. Still to be determined are file formats that can be accommodated.

Submissions:

Prospective authors of self-contained multimedia works should discuss projects with the chair of the Newfound Press Editorial Board. Proposals to the Editorial Board should include project title, content description and significance, audience, proposed file sizes and formats, and names of potential peer reviewers. Projects submitted for publication will receive peer review that considers content, design, visual appeal, and navigability, elements that enable the work to convey a message.
