Newfound Press Frequently Asked Questions

What is Newfound Press?

The University of Tennessee Libraries launched its digital imprint, Newfound Press, in 2005 to develop a framework for making scholarly and specialized works available through effective and open systems of scholarly communication. Newfound Press extends frontiers of learning by publishing peer-reviewed works in all disciplines, encompassing scientific research, humanistic scholarship, and artistic creation. Members of the Editorial Board represent a spectrum of disciplines and pursue diverse scholarly interests.

What are the benefits of publishing with Newfound Press?

Newfound Press makes peer reviewed publications available globally through the Web. Peer review provides a traditional scholarly imprimatur of quality, and online availability offers exceptionally current access to research and ideas 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. Publishing with Newfound Press ensures sustainable access through the library’s emerging digital preservation standards. Because copyright owners grant Newfound Press non-exclusive rights to the content, authors retain the option to disseminate their work in other ways. UT’s Digital Library Initiatives provides use measures for Newfound Press publications, valuable data for authors who wish to document the impact of their work. Authors of innovative formats or content with a narrow focus are of special interest to the Newfound Press Editorial Board.

What services does Newfound Press offer?

Newfound Press collaborates with authors and researchers to bring new forms of publication to an expanding scholarly universe. Inquiries may begin with any member of the Editorial Board and are typically followed by a proposal or a completed work ready for peer review. Services include:

•Consultation
•Management of the peer review process
•Presentation design
•Web access 24/7
•Addition of discovery mechanisms, such as ISSN, metadata, cataloging
•Promotion of Newfound Press publications
•Preservation of current and archival files

•Demonstrates scholarly rigor
•Offers an innovative presentation, particularly involving multimedia
•Contains content and approach of potential interest across disciplines
•Reflects regional relevance
•Merits wide dissemination and preservation, but unlikely to be published by a traditional press because of narrow focus or innovative format

For which disciplines does Newfound Press publish?

Newfound Press seeks manuscripts in all disciplines, encompassing scientific research, humanistic scholarship, and artistic creation.

What format is acceptable for submission? What format is required for digital publication?

Manuscripts should be submitted in MS Word or other appropriate format (as determined in advance with the chair of the Editorial Board) for peer review. After a manuscript is accepted, Newfound Press will prepare the content for public access in searchable pdf. For more information, please review our Guidelines for Submissions.

What is the Newfound Press copyright policy?

Newfound Press requires authors and editors to sign a permissions form that grants the press non-exclusive rights to publish the content online in perpetuity. Copyright owners have the flexibility to grant additional permissions for publication or dissemination. A copyright statement that accompanies each publication describes ownership and conditions for reproduction. Generally, Newfound Press publications may be printed or downloaded without prior permission as long as the original work is credited. Sample license language is available for review.

How does Newfound Press ensure the quality of publications?

Quality is fundamental to Newfound Press. Publications are peer reviewed by subject experts who evaluate the content according to traditional standards for determining scholarly rigor. A Newfound Press goal is to earn a reputation for offering to researcher and general public high quality content that might not otherwise be available in a market-driven economy.

What kind of audience does Newfound Press expect to serve?

The audience for Newfound Press publications includes researchers, practitioners, students, and other scholars of virtually any subject.
