Index and Citation

arrows

An index identifies the location of some kind of information. For example, the index in a book tells you where to find words or terms in that book.

A separately published index, such as a journal index, gives citations so that you can find journal articles.

A journal citation gives you basically the same information as an entry on a list of works cited or a bibliography, including:

  • author of the article
  • title of the article
  • journal title, volume number, year and page number(s)

Why not use the online catalog to find journal articles?

The online catalog tells you what specific journal titles and volumes are found in the music library. It does NOT list the contents (articles) of the journals.
