Research Revolution:
Science and the Shaping of the Modern Life
We invite you to participate in this documentary and discussion program to investigate the impact of research-based science on our everyday lives.
The twentieth century has witnessed many extraordinary events and experiences, but none more significant than the pace of scientific discovery and technological transformation. Many discoveries made in university and industrial research laboratories impact our everyday lives in direct and important ways. Understanding the historical evolution and the contemporary character of the Research Revolution will enable us, as citizens, to deal more effectively with the new choices that rapid scientific change creates. The film/discussion series The Research Revolution will provide an historical perspective and a contemporary context on:
- how artificially created substances have transformed
our daily lives and the very way we view the relationship between the
natural and the artificial.
- how war and national defense have been revolutionized by the infusion of scientific, technological and even social research.
- and finally on the way we view ourselves in relation to our natural environment.
To find out more about this series, please read the Introductory
Article by Robert Kargon, which provides an excellent overview
and context for the sessions in this series.

The Research Revolution includes 6 sessions. Each session has:
- a documentary, which places scientific discoveries in their
historical context
- discussions led by Dr. Mark Littmann, University of Tennessee Chair of Excellence in Science, Technology, and Medical Writing
- an essay on issues and concerns raised by the film, written by a scholar/expert in the particular area of interest
