FAQ - Summer 2009

Media Collections and Services

The Media Center is closed and Media Services have moved to the Hodges Library Circulation/Media/Reserve desk. It is part of a new department called Integrated User Services, which includes Commons services and the Research and Assistance desk, The Studio, Instructional Services and Circulation/Media/Reserve.

Goals for the media collection include DVD replacement of VHS format as quickly as possible and conversion to digital streaming files as the format for the near future.

Library Videos Can Be Streamed for Your Class!
If you are teaching a class and want to be sure it is available for your students to view for the semester, take the Title and Call Number to DMS (next to 2nd floor Circulation Desk).  They will stream it for you, and provide you with a link you can upload to BlackBoard.  This service is only available for library-owned video materials.

Place Your Own Videos on Reserve!
Faculty can still put personal copies on reserve for their students to watch at Hodges Library.  Bring your VHS or DVD videos to the Circulation Desk and fill out a Video Reserve Form.  The videos will be available for your students to check out at the Circulation Desk for in-library use only.  Reserve is not available for library-owned video materials.

* Please suggest titles that you wish us to purchase so they may be part of the library collection and available for digitization.

The Video Collection has been moved!
The video collection has been moved to three locations.  If a video that your class is going to be using is in Areas 2 or the Third Floor Media Collection, please let us know and we will move it to the Circulation Desk for easier access for you and your students.

Please refer to the chart below:

Out-of-building Circulation!

Faculty, Instructors, and GTA’s can check out 3 videos for 3 days.  To renew videos, they must be physically brought back to the Circulation Desk.

Interlibrary Loan of Videos!

Interlibrary loan requests for videos not owned by the library are handled through Interlibrary Services.  For questions and policies, please contact them at 974-4240 or ilsmail@utk.edu.

Library Express Can Deliver Videos to Faculty!
Faculty can request delivery of videos.  Three day / three items / no renewals.  To find out more, please contact Library Express at 974-0555 or e-mail your questions to express@utk.edu

Where do I (or my students) view DVDs and VHS tapes?

In-building use (typically for 3 hours):  For items in either collection, users may take them to a playback unit (VHS and/or DVD) or the computers (DVD) in the former Media Center (Room 245)—or view them in one of the equipped small group rooms in that area (245 A-E). A DVD may also be played on any Commons computer or on your own laptop. There is also one additional VHS player located in Commons North. If you do not have your own headphones you can use your UT ID to check out a pair from the Commons North Information and Referral Desk (where you can check out laptop PCs), or from the Studio in Room 245, or you can purchase a pair from the University Store in the Library. Faculty may still show them to classes in the media group viewing rooms (129, 212, 213, 251, 252, 253 and the Auditorium.  Return all items to the Circulation Desk.

How do I reserve a group viewing room for my class?

Make your reservation by phone, email, or in-person.  We will continue to use the reservation system currently in use.  Only faculty or GTAs may reserve group rooms for specific class session viewings.  Request a group-room reservation by contacting staff at the Circulation Desk.  The form is located here. The telephone number is 974 - 4473. You may view the room schecule to check availability. Note:  Our video router is no longer working so all rooms are now hands-on use only. We can no longer send a video to a room or have it start at a particular time.

Has anything changed about the Group Viewing Rooms?

They are now hands-on use only. Faculty need to bring the item to the room and use the playback equipment. Please ask for training, ifyou need it. Library and IT Engineering staff are avialable to trouble-shoot equipment problems. Phones and contact numbers will be in the rooms

How do I obtain 16mm films?

The 16mm films are now being kept in storage and need to be requested as a storage item. Search for the title in the Library Catalog; choose Find Items to see the item record.  Then choose Request on the far right of the screen to ask for delivery.  You will be notified by e-mail when the film will be available at the circulation desk or (for faculty) it can be delivered by Library Express.
