Understanding Plagiarism

Increased incidences of plagiarism have become an issue of concern on most college campuses today. Though academic dishonesty is not a new problem, it is acknowledged that access to online databases, electronic journals, and the Internet has made copying another person's original work without attribution easier and more tempting. Recognizing that plagiarism and other forms of academic dishonesty devalue honest work, and ultimately the college degree itself, the University Libraries has identified a variety of informative websites to help students, faculty, and staff better understand the concept of plagiarism: what is, what can be done, how to avoid it, and more. An organized list of links is provided below.

"The University expects that all academic work will provide an honest reflection of the knowledge and abilities of both students and faculty. Cheating, plagiarism fabrication of data, providing unauthorized help, and other acts of academic dishonesty are abhorrent to the purposes for which the University exists" (Hilltopics: Students Handbook, 2004 -2005, p. 41).
