Finding Background Information

Once you identify one or two topics that interest you, you will need to find background information. This allows you to familiarize yourself with the topic and also discover whether or not there is enough information on the topic. General resources will often include encyclopedias, handbooks and other reference sources. Once you have determined whether or not there is enough information on your topic, you can proceed to more in-depth resources.

encyclopedias

For Example:

If you are writing a paper on how the events of 9/11 fit into the larger world of terrorism, you might get some background information from Terrorism: A Guide to Events and Documents or Encyclopedia of Terrorism.

Background information usually comes from more general sources, such as encyclopedias and other reference works on specific subjects. Try the following on-line resources or go to the reference collection for print resources. Go to the reference desk on the first floor of Hodges Library if you need assistance.
