Selecting a Topic
Introduction
When it comes time to write a research paper, there are steps that can help make the process easier, faster and smoother. Remember that you are writing a research paper, not a book.
We will examine each of these steps on the following pages:
- Brainstorming:
- Finding Background Information:
- Refining Your Topic:
- Starting Your Research:
This step can be the hardest part of the process; however, the strategies and tools in this section will help. Try to pick something that is related to your interests.
This step is the time saver. Looking for background information helps you learn about concepts and terms for your topic and allows you to determine if there is enough information about your topic.
This step develops your brainstorm into a refined topic idea. If, in your background research, you find that there is not enough information on your topic, you may need to broaden or modify your focus. On the other hand, if you discover that you have too much material, it may be necessary to narrow your focus. A thesis statement will help you identify your topic focus.
Once you have focused on your topic, you need to research it. There are many different resources available for you; this step will get you started.
