During the Spring of 2005, Communication Studies 210 students helped the University Libraries participate in Project SAILS (Standardized Assessment of Information Literacy Skills). Researchers at Kent State University are working to develop a standardized, easily administered, and reliable measure of information literacy skills. Universities in United States and Canada participated in Phase 3 of the project.
At the University of Tennessee, students enrolled in Communication Studies 210 answered a set of about 45 questions and received research participation credit for completing the survey. Each participating university received a report that will help in planning information literacy programs and library instruction. Kent State will use the aggregate data they collect to further refine the survey.
Marie Garrett and Rita Smith coordinated the project. Teresa Walker created the programming to link to the survey and to collect the data. We thank Laura Smith, director of the Communication Studies 210 program, and her fellow instructors for their help in making this project possible. |
