The Challenge

Ultimately, the definition of information literacy that matters will be the one that each of us-as educators or as students—finds relevant. What meaning does information hold for us? How do we—how will we—handle information at home, on the job, and in the classroom? How important is it to us to be able to find, evaluate, and apply information in a range of circumstances?

Each of us will define information literacy from a unique perspective,
and that perspective will determine what we do with it.

The challenge for educators is to find ways to help students build their skills throughout their educational experience. The building of information literacy skills begins early in life, grows significantly across the educational process, and continues throughout life. The ability to effectively handle information cannot be gained in any one course or in any one semester.

Information literacy builds through a variety of learning experiences inside the classroom and in life.
