How Do I—Dissertations

How Do I Locate a Dissertation

Dissertations are available in paper format or electronically, depending of date of completion. Several options for locating a master's thesis or Ph.D dissertation are possible:

  • For paper copies of UT doctoral dissertations and master's theses from early years to the present, search the UT Libraries catalog. Both dissertations and theses are listed in the library catalog by AUTHOR and by TITLE. They are also listed by the college or department in which the degrees were completed. Subject indexing is very limited. For help, consult the search tips.

  • Electronic copies of Ph.D dissertations completed at UT from 1997 to the present are available through UMI's Current Research database. Access to full text of the dissertation is limited to UT faculty, staff, and students; others may preview selected pages and have the option to purchase full text.

  • From 1999 on, electronic access to the full text of a growing number of UT master's theses and Ph.D dissertations is available to all users through the UT ETD (Electronic Theses/Dissertations) website. Links to these electronic theses and dissertations are also available in the UT Libraries catalog.

  • Dissertations from 1861 to the present completed at over 1000 institutions worldwide are listed in Dissertation Abstracts. Access to this database is limited to UT faculty, staff, and students. No full text, but abstracts from 1980 to the present are available.

How Do I Obtain a Copy of a Dissertation

If you are a UT Faculty Member, Staff, or Student:

  • You may borrow UT dissertations/theses like any other book. The Libraries Catalog will provide the call number and location.
  • If you need a non-UT dissertation/thesis, Interlibrary Services can often borrow a copy for your use. Submit your request using the ILS online form.
  • If you prefer to purchase a copy of a dissertation, contact Interlibrary Services for pricing information.

If You Are NOT Affiliated with UT Knoxville as a Faculty Member, Staff, or Student

  • You can borrow a dissertation or thesis from the University of Tennessee through your local library. Contact your local library to determine the procedure.
  • If you prefer to own a copy of a doctoral dissertation, you can purchase it from Dissertation Express. If you are affiliated with a large university, contact your library about possible academic discounts.
