Periodicals/Documents and Microforms

Periodicals

The print periodicals collection houses current issues of periodicals including scholarly journals, and general interest magazines. The currency of the periodicals in the collection depends on the frequency of the publication.

Mostly, they are the current year and the year previous. Older journals are usually bound and shelved in the general collection on Floors 3 through 6. Some titles are retained in the periodicals collection awaiting receipt of microfilm or release of electronic versions.

Back issues received on microfilm may be located in Periodicals/Documents and Microforms or in the Storage collection in the Hoskins Library. Formats and retention vary by title. Always check the catalog for exact locations and to request titles from Storage.

Using the Collection

Periodicals are shelved by Library of Congress call number. To find a call number for a periodical, search the Online Catalog by the periodical title or corporate author.

Each catalog entry includes the call number, location, and any notes such as missing volumes or title changes. Select “Find Items” to view specific volume holdings, formats, and locations.

Print holdings for current issues will be indicated as:
Hodges Periodicals Documents - Microforms / Periodicals: AP2.T37

Microform holdings will be indicated as:
Hodges Documents - Microforms / Microforms: AP2.T37

If a periodical is in microform, a location symbol of (MF), (MC), or (MP) will precede the call number.  For information on locating periodicals in microform, see the microform information section of this document. Ask for assistance if a title cannot be located.

The UT Libraries' holdings include subscriptions to electronic journals. The E-Journals List has the latest information on electronic holdings.
