Annual Giving

Annual giving is crucial to the University of Tennessee Libraries for many reasons. By making contributions from year to year, alumni, parents and friends provide a continuous stream of support for academic and student life programs. The gifts, which are largely unrestricted, go directly toward the bottom line for the libraries and its programs.

Gifts of Materials

The University Libraries welcomes gifts of materials, within the scope of its collection policies, that support the teaching and research activities of the University.

The Libraries reserves the right to review all gifts before acceptance, and subject librarians evaluate gifts on a title-by-title basis. Once accepted, all gifts become the property of the University Libraries. The Libraries reserves the right to determine retention, location, cataloging, disposition, and other factors relating to the gift. Donors are asked not to place restrictions on these options.

Gifts to the University Libraries are tax deductible. To ensure the appropriate documentation of your gift for tax purposes, please complete a Gift Form (PDF file) and return it to the Collection Development Office, 552 Hodges Library.

Endowment Gifts

Endowment gifts are invested, and therefore generate a steady stream of income for the libraries. Endowments can create income for faculty and staff positions, graduate assistantships, fellowships, lectures and book funds as well as many other purposes. Donors may also create unrestricted endowments, which produce resources that can be used where the need is greatest. In this way, you can continue to make a difference for all library users for years to come.

Matching Gifts from Employers

Many companies encourage their employees to make charitable contributions and will match contributions an employee makes. The impact of support from corporate matching can be enormous. To find out if your company supports corporate matching for charitable contributions, use an online search or consult your human resources office.

Appreciated Securities

To save a substantial portion of your stock earnings from capital gains taxation, consider making your gift to the libraries as appreciated stock. A gift of stock held more than one year may qualify for a charitable income tax deduction equal to the securities' full fair-market value. It is also possible to make a gift with appreciated securities in a mutual fund.
