Giving to the Libraries
About the Libraries
The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, the flagship of the state university system, was founded in 1794 and designated as the state land-grant institution in 1869. The UT system has campuses in Chattanooga and Martin, a health sciences center in Memphis and a Space Institute in Tullahoma.
The main Knoxville campus remains the largest, with 20,000 undergraduate and 6,000 graduate students enrolled in 400 academic programs in 15 schools and colleges. UT was issued a Doctoral/Research University - Extensive classification by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, a designation held by just 3.8% of the 3,941 rated institutions.
A well-developed library can be the catalyst that allows for outstanding academic achievement at the university. More than just a collection of books, the university libraries serves the community in many ways, by offering reference and instructional services, technological and media resources as well as subject liaisons in a variety of disciplines.
The UT Libraries system holds more than 2 million volumes, with an annual materials budget of $5 million and a staff of approximately 300. In 2005, the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) ranked the University of Tennessee Libraries 45th among all major academic research libraries in North America and 27th among public research libraries.
The university libraries are also a founding member of the Digital Library Federation, a consortium of 15 research institutions established in 1995 to create a system of independently distributed repositories of digital works.
