Department : Special Collections
The Modern Political Archive of Special Collections, located in the Howard H. Baker Center for Public Policy, seeks qualified students to assist in processing and providing access to our collection of historic materials.
Hours:
15 hours per week; schedule is negotiable within our business hours (9:00am-5:00pm, Monday-Friday) but ability to work 1-5 on Thursdays is highly preferred.
Required Qualifications:
- Current UT student (undergraduate or graduate) in liberal arts or information science (preferred)
- Excellent communication skills (written and verbal)
- Comfortable working with computers and learning new software
- Must be able to work independently
- Organized and has strong attention to detail
- Punctual and reliable
- Interest in history or special collections librarianship
- Must be able to lift 40 lbs. for moving and shifting boxes
Preferred Qualifications:
- Prior library work experience
- Prior research experience within Special Collections
- Familiarity with HTML
- Familiar with scanning and Adobe software
- Ability to work on Thursday afternoons from 1-5pm, when the reading room is open to the public (other research is done on an appointment-only basis)
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Arrange and describe collections of historic manuscripts and archival materials
- Create detailed inventories/finding aids using Encoded Archival Description (EAD)
- Work with staff to provide appropriate preservation treatments to materials as needed
- Work assigned shift on the reference desk answering the telephone and assisting researchers in the reading room
- Other duties as assigned
