Department : Special Collections

Special Collections, located in Hodges Library, seeks qualified students to assist in processing and providing access to our collection of historic materials.

Hours: 15 hours per week; schedule is negotiable within our business hours (9:00-5:30, Monday-Friday).

Required Qualifications:

  • Current UT student (undergraduate or graduate) in liberal arts or information science (preferred)
  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal)
  • Comfortable working with computers and learning new software
  • Must be able to work independently
  • Organized and has strong attention to detail
  • Punctual and reliable
  • Interest in history or special collections librarianship
  • Must be able to lift 40 lbs. for moving and shifting boxes

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior library work experience
  • Prior research experience within Special Collections
  • Familiarity with HTML
  • Familiar with scanning and Adobe software

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Arrange and describe collections of historic manuscripts and archival materials
  • Create detailed inventories/finding aids using Encoded Archival Description (EAD)
  • Work with staff to provide appropriate preservation treatments to materials as needed
  • Work assigned shift on the Special Collections reference desk answering the telephone and assisting researchers in the reading room
  • Other duties as assigned
