GENERAL FUNCTION
The Media Literacy Librarian provides leadership in the integration of media literacy skills and concepts into teaching and learning. The successful candidate will report to the Head, Learning and Engagement and join a group of Learning, Research, and Collections (LRC) Librarians responsible for learning and engagement, research and scholars services, and collections activities in assigned liaison areas. The incumbent contributes course and programmatic design for active, blended, and online instructional delivery by providing expertise and instruction in the use of media creation software, hardware, and pedagogy. The Media Literacy Librarian plans, develops, and assesses services and instruction focused on increasing student and instructor success with media-enhanced coursework.
This position directs The Studio, a cutting edge media lab with complex media source equipment, graphics and audio/video workstations and studios. The Media Literacy Librarian oversees the provision of equipment, instruction, and consultation services through the Studio; ensures suitable levels of staffing and appropriate training for the delivery of consultation services in the Studio; and establishes strategic relationships and instructional programs supporting curricular requirements in the creation and use of media.
SPECIFIC DUTIES
- Provide expertise on the Libraries’ adoption and use of media technologies to support student-created content
- Collaborate with teaching faculty across disciplines to provide specialized instruction and consultations integrating media literacy concepts and skills into the curriculum
- Provide guidance in fair use and copyright regarding media creation and use in the classroom
- Work with Library Administration, LRC Librarians, and Assessment Librarian to plan, implement, and assess media instruction and services in a media commons environment
- Develop best practices, standards, and student learning outcomes for media and media literacy instruction
- Manage The Studio media lab and consultation services
- Direct the hiring, scheduling, training, and evaluation of staff in The Studio including: level 36, non-exempt Media Specialist; Studio Graduate Teaching Assistant, and student consultants
- Build campus partnerships to create best practices and sustainable models for specialized hardware and software offerings for students working with media technologies and the curation of locally created online teaching materials and user-generated content
- Stay abreast of trends in media creation and recommend and implement related technology offerings for students, faculty and staff.
- Serve as an LRC librarian for Broadcasting and Electronic Media in the College of Communication and Information.
- Engage in professional development, research, and service activities to meet the Libraries and University requirements for faculty.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
- ALA accredited master’s degree
- Two years related work experience, including demonstrated experience using software and hardware for media design and development, particularly through the use of industry-standard software tools for graphics design and video editing in MAC and Windows environments
- Recent supervisory experience
- Strong service orientation with experience managing a media lab
- Experience teaching media concepts and technologies
- Experience with course management software, social media platforms, and web-based subject or course guides
- Demonstrated understanding of the applied concepts of media literacy including fair use of media and proper attribution
Preferred:
- Experience assessing effectiveness of library services and programs
- Experience providing research assistance
