Diversity Home

The University of Tennessee Libraries' Diversity Committee is dedicated to creating a more inclusive community in all realms of service grounded in respect and appreciation for individual differences. The Committee endorses a broad definition of diversity, and seeks to provide programs and resources that enhance knowledge and encourage understanding of diversity. The Committee strives to provide leadership for the Libraries in meeting the needs of all its constituencies and special populations.


Excerpts from University of Tennessee Libraries' Planning Documents that relate to diversity:
From Library Plan 2002-2006:
"Commit to the value of a broad approach to diversity that includes ethnic, cultural, religious, gender and experiential differences.
• Mount a long-term diversity program through the work of the Diversity Committee
• Initiate a dialogue within the Libraries to define and examine diversity issues
• Undertake a program of outreach to international students
• Set priorities and take action to ensure a diverse library staff, collection, and environment"

"The University Libraries value diversity in staff, users, and collections and work to provide a climate of openness, acceptance, and respect for individuals and points of view."

From Priority Action Items for 2003 - A priority under the Outstanding Faculty and Staff heading:
• "Recruit two Diversity Librarians Residency Program participants"
• "Recruit and retain more employees from historically under-represented groups"

From Priority Action Items for 2002 - A priority under the Personnel heading:
"Create a diverse and welcoming library environment guided by the results of the Diversity Climate survey."
