Understanding Islam: Electronic Resources

The following resources related to Islam have been selected as part of the Spring/Summer 2004 Culture Corner. These resources consist of databases, electronic books, and websites. The electronic books are available for online "checkout" through the library's catalog for anyone affiliated with the University. They can be read online or "checked out" for four hours. The databases and electronic books can be accessed from within the UT Libraries or if you connect to the Internet with the UT service or through the proxy server. A few databases may be freely available on the web and are indicated by an * next to their name. The selected websites are available free on the Web.


Databases:

The following databases can be used to locate articles, books, book chapters, or news related to the research and study of Islam and issues within Islam. It is also suggested that multidisciplinary databases also be searched, as Islam appears in many aspects of society and culture.

eHRAF Collection of Ethnography
"The eHRAF Collection of Ethnography is a cross-cultural database that contains over 350,000 pages of information on all aspects of cultural and social life."

Ethnic Newswatch 1990+
Full text national and international news articles from over 230 publications of special interest to the ethnic, Diversity and native populations of the United States. In English and Spanish.

Humanities Abstracts 1984+
Index of English-language periodicals in a wide range of humanities topics.

*Humanities Text Initiative
A collection of literary, historical, and religious texts developed by the University of Michigan. Includes projects like the American Verse Project and the Making of America.

PAIS (Public Affairs Information Service) 1972+
"It is a bibliographic index to the literature of public policy, social policy, and the social sciences in general. Journal articles; books; government documents; statistical compilations; committee reports; directories; serials; reports of public, intergovernmental, and private organizations; and most other forms of printed literature from all over the world are indexed."

Provides indexing and abstracts from journals and books in philosophy and related interdisciplinary fields.

Columbia University Libraries' Middle East Studies Internet Resources:

Muslim Student Association:
The official website of UTK's Muslim Student Association. Site includes events, information about Islam, news, and how to contact the association, among other information.

The Nation of Islam:
The official website of the Nation of Islam, includes a history of the group, and other information related to The Nation. "...committed to providing...visitors official statements, current events, general information and reference material."

The University of Arizona Library's Middle East Collection: Middle Eastern Newspapers Online:
"Offers links to Middle Eastern newspapers available online. Some of the papers are in arabic and hebrew, categorized by country, and all are available free on the Web."
