employees.
Celebrating Our Library Family's Diversity, April 2006 - May 2006
During the month of April and early May, the Committee hosted a number of events, activities and displays that allowed us
to share our histories and heritages and learn just how we
are different and how much we truly have in common. A flyer announces the activities is available here. Activities included:
"Where Are We From? Display Case, April 10, 2006 - April 23, 2006
For part of the month of April, the Libraries' display case on the first floor featured a display related to the employee diversity. The display case featured two large maps that showed where some employees were born and where some of our ancestors were from. The case also included old family photos and heirlooms as well as books related to genealogy."A Gift of Difference in the Academic Library" - Loretta Parham
On April 11th and 12th the Libraries hosted Loretta Parham, Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Robert W. Woodruff Library in the Atlanta University Center. Loretta shared her background and insight into diversity issues within the field, espeically in terms of the importance of employee diversity. The committee helped to support Loretta's visit and was able to hold a special meeting with her to discuss the history of the Committee and to receive input from Loretta on topics related to activities the Committee is engaged in. During the month of April, the Committee launched a new program called Lunch 'N View, designed to bring films/documentaries with diverse themes and topics to the employees of the Libraries. On April 17, 2006 the Committee showed "Yeah, You Rite," a film that looked at the "colorful" speech of the residents of New Orleans. On April 25, 2006 the Committee showed "African American Lives," a documentary that looks at the history of African Americans through genealogy, oral history, family stories and DNA analysis. On April 26, 2006 the Committee hosted a potluck style family reunion in the staff room. Everyone was invited to bring a dish with family, cultural, or personal significance to share with others. Recipes for the event were also gathered and placed into an online recipe book, "The Cookbook Project", being hosted in conjunction with the Libraries' Staff Development Advisory Committee.Let's Talk About It: "Excavating the Genealogical Record", May 3, 2006
This installment of the Committee's series featured Anthony Smith from the Digital Library Center. Anthony focused on genealogical research that he has completed and shared his experiences as he researched his family history.
Library Student Recognition Celebration, February 16, 2006
The Committee hosted the fourth annual Student Recognition Celebration, themed "Students are the Heart of the Libraries". Student workers who had worked at the Libraries for two or more years received special recognition with a certificate presented by the Dean and a book plated in their honor. Members of the Dean's Student Advisory Committee were also honored by Dean with certificate presentations. See an example of the event's invitation and pictures from the event.

Let’s Talk About It: “African Cultural Mosaic: Views from the West to the South”, December 6, 2005
Presenters Maud Mundava and LaVerne Gray shared information on the diversity that is the continent of Africa from the perspectives of someone who was born there and someone who lived there as a member of the Peace Corps.
Let’s Talk About It - “Celebrating Diversity: Gay and Lesbian History Month", October 26, 2005
Presenters Mark Puente, Donna Braquet, and Roger Weaver shared answers to questions such as:
- the meaning behind the Rainbow flag?
- what it’s like to come out as a gay person?
- how the Gay Rights Movement began?
as well as taking the time to answer questions from their colleagues about their own experiences.

Erica Clark from Library Development shared her experiences from here trip to China.
Library Student Recognition Celebration, February 23, 2005
The Committee hosted the third annual Student
Recognition Celebration. Student workers at the UT Libraries
were honored, with special recognition going to those students who
had worked at the Libraries for two or more years.
