2002

Team Excellence Award, December 11, 2002
The Diversity Committee received the University's Team Excellence Award for 2002. The award is presented to a team that exemplifies the true essence of teamwork in advancing the goals of the unit and the university. Selection is based upon outstanding performance and results due to group achievement. A plaque was presented to the Committee by the Provost and each Committee member received a certificate. School of Information Science Panel, November 5, 2002
Committee members collaborated with the UT School of Information Science Student Chapter of the Tennessee Library Association to present a panel discussion on "Programming for Changing Communities: Diversity Issues in Today's Libraries." An overview of the Committee's organization, goals, and current projects was presented.

Members of the Committee accept the University's Team Excellence Award.

Co-Sponsorship of Author Talk, Reception and Book Signing, October 28, 2002

Along with the Black Cultural Programming Committee and the Library Friends, the Diversity Committee sponsored a visit to campus by the best-selling author, BeBe Moore Campbell. See the press release for this event.

 

Participation in UT's Fall Festival, October 10, 2002
The Diversity Committee participated in the University's annual Fall Festival by submitting an entry to the festival's scarecrow contest. The Committee's Diverse Scarecrow won 2nd place in the university-wide competition. See photos of the Committee's entry to the right.

Support of UT's new Black Cultural Center, September 2002
The Committee supported the University's new Black Cultural Center by purchasing a brick during the Center's Courtyard Brick Project in the fall of 2001.

Library staff were encouraged by the Committee to participate in the Center's grand opening activities on September 6-7, 2002.

"Welcome Back" Display, August 2002
The Committee welcomed back students, faculty, and staff for the new academic year with a display entitled DIVERSITY @ UT LIBRARIES=YOU. The display, located on the first floor of Hodges Library, highlighted Committee accomplishments and future plans.

Women's Education Display, March 2002
The Diversity Committee sponsored a display which was created by a UT cultural studies class. The display, located on the first floor of Hodges Library, was entitled "A Tribute to Women's Education" and featured some firsts at the university.

2001

Lecture Co-Sponsorship, November 16, 2001
The Diversity Committee co-sponsored the Center for Applied and Professional Ethics lecture by nationally recognized scholar Dr. John Corvino. See the flyer for this event.

"A Call for Civility," September 12, 2001
The Diversity Committee issued a statement to the Libraries' faculty and staff on September 12, 2001, in response to the tragic events of September 11th. The statement offered support and provided information about campus reaction and scheduled events. "A Call for Civility" web page, linked from the Libraries' home page, was created to provide information and support in this time of need. The Diversity Committee collaborated with the Libraries' annual Campus Chest Campaign to solicit donations for the American Red Cross support and rescue efforts in New York and Washington, D.C.
