Frequently Asked Questions |
Current periodicals are considered in high demand and, therefore, can only be used in the department. Most Periodicals in bound form are in the stacks (floors 3 through 6) and can be checked out for three days at a time. Some bound journals, primarily in the fields of nursing and psychology, have been designated as non-circulating, which means they must be used in the building. These will be marked "For Use In Library Only" on the date due slip.
Periodicals are arranged in order using the Library of Congress cataloging system. A brief outline of how this system works can be found here.
The call number for a journal can be found by consulting the online catalog at any one of the public access terminals. If you have a problem locating a periodical ask at our desk in the Periodicals Department.
Yes, we have several microfilm reader/printers in the Periodical Department.

The most recent issues of USA Today, New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, the Knoxville News Sentinel (including Sunday),and The Chronicle of Higher Education are located in the newspaper rack opposite the microform stacks. Foreign and domestic newspapers are located on the shelves next to the newspaper rack. Older issues of the Knoxville News Sentinel are kept behind the desk until the microfilm arrives. They are then shelved by call number in the microfilm stacks. For a complete list of newspapers to which the library subscribes, go to http://aztec.lib.utk.edu/~circ/per/newspaper.html.
The books are located on the stacks floors, 3-6 and are shelved in call number order beginning with the A's on the third floor and working up to the thesis on the sixth floor.
Bound periodicals are magazines and journals whose previous issues have been bound together into a "book" form. These have the same call number as the single, unbound issues that are found in the Periodicals Department. In most cases, these can be checked out for three days at a time.
Microformed journals have the same call number as the single, unbound issues. Their location differs from bound journals in that they are kept in the Periodicals Department on the microform shelves.
All of the copiers in the Periodicals Department are set up to take both cash and the copycard. Copies using the copycard cost 6 cents per page, those made with straight cash cost 10 cents per page.
There are copycard dispensers in Periodicals, Reserve, Duplication and next to the main Circulation desk that can be used to add money to your copycard. Additionally, money can be added to a copycard at most of the copiers in the building.

To determine which format the journal you need is in, consult the online catalog
The photocopiers in the Periodicals Department are not equipped to handle departmental charges. Photocopies can be charged to a departmental account only in the Duplication Department.
In order to conserve space, the library has placed older volumes of many journals in an off-site storage facility.
