GLOBAL/non-U.S. SETS AND SERIES

  • Army Mapping Service (AMS): maps of the world in various scales and coverages.
(Located in Hoskins Library, Room 200)
  • Canada Map Office: 1;250,000 coverage of Canada.
(Located in Hoskins Library, Room 200)
  • Geographical Section, General Staff (GSGS): maps of the world in various scales and coverages.  (Please See Map Services Staff)
  • National Imagery and Mapping Agency (NIMA), formerly the Defense Mapping Agency (DMA)
Nautical Chart Series: divides the world into nine different regions with each region seperately indexed. The Charts themselves are very similar to the domestic nautical charts produced by the National Ocean Service. They focus primarily on the coastline and territorial waters of the landmasses and give only slight information about the land mass itself. Depths and distances are represented in meters.
(Located in Hoskins Library, Room 200)  (Please See Map Services Staff)
  • Non-U.S. Topographic Series: in a large variety of scales and areas of coverage. Most of the Map Services's collection of these maps are fairly dated (ca. 1940-1960), but offer a good look at the topography for most parts of the world.  (Please See Map Services Staff)
  • Ordnance Survey of Great Britain: 1:50,000 topographic coverage of England, Scotland and Wales.
  • PAIGH: 1:250,000 coverage of South and Central America.

Topographic Series
  • 7.5 minute Topographic Maps
  • 15 minute Topographic Maps

DMA domestic topographic series cover only those areas of the U.S. that have major U.S. military reservations. They are very similar to the USGS topographic series, but have a 10,000 meter grid superimposed over each mapped area. This grid is designed for use with a military protractor and can be used to give coordinates down to ten square meters.

-Series Indexes

To complement these collected series, Map Services also maintains a comprehensive collection of current and historic indexes for these and other series produced by the U.S. Government. Indexes that show the extent of series coverage, data collection and production, and materials in other formats are also indexed. Map Services collects all available USGS indexes - even for series and materials not collected by Map Services.
