DOQ: Digital Orthophoto Quadrangle Data.
USGS.
Contains all digital orthophoto quadrangle (DOQ) images necessary to cover a complete county (e.g., McHenry County, Illinois) or parish and may include adjacent quadrangles. The data files on this CD were compressed using software developed by the Independent Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG). Many shareware, public domain, and commercially available image display and image processing programs include JPEG decompression software. The primary digital orthophoto quadrangle (DOQ) is a 1-meter ground resolution image covering an area 3.75 minutes of latitude by 3.75 minutes of longitude, cast on the Universal Transverse Mercator projection on the North American Datum (NAD) of 1983 (NAD 83). The DOQ has between 50 and 300 meters of overedge, sufficient to facilitate tonal matching for mosaicking and the placement of NAD 83 and NAD of 1927 quarter-quadrangle corner ticks that are embedded in the image. The JPEG irreversible compression standard is a block-based algorithm that independently considers each 8- by 8-pixel block constituting an image. A standard DOQ from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has a ground resolution of 1 meter. Each DOQ on this CD-ROM is roughly 10 times smaller than the original image. Through image mosaicking, two or more rectified DOQ images can be combined and merged into one image. A digital orthophoto in 7.5-minute format can be produced by mosaicking four DOQ's. The DOQ is formatted as four ASCII header records, followed by a series of 8-bit binary image data records. The radiometric image brightness values are stored as 256 gray levels. The approximate file size for a DOQ is 55 megabytes. The metadata in the DOQ header records contain descriptive information about the image including photographic source type, date, instrumentation used to create the DOQ, and information relating to the digital elevation model used in the rectification process. For the DOQ files on this CD, a q-factor has been chosen to receive a compression ratio of about 10 to 1. Even at this ratio, some block artifacts will exist in the reconstituted images. Postprocessing using low-pass filters reduces these artifacts but also degrades resolution. Software is required to run this program. A very limited number of counties are currently available. Current holdings.

APSRS: Aerial Photography Summary Record System. USGS/US GeoData.
The Aerial Photography Summary Record System (APSRS) describes aerial photography projects that meet specified criteria over a given geographic area of the United States. The APSRS CD-ROM contains over 2.5 million records referencing the holdings of more than 600 contributors from Federal, State, and local government agencies, universities, and the private sector. There are two data bases in the system: the APSRS data base and the contributor's data base. Each record in the APSRS data base contains up to 13 descriptive fields. All fields can be displayed, and 12 of the 13 fields can be searched. Not all fields, however, contain data for every record. The following fields are included in the APSRS data base: agency, latitude, longitude, State/county, date of coverage, project code. scale, focal length, film type, sensor class, percentage of cloud cover, percentage of quadrangle covered, and remarks. Each record in the contributor's data base contains the name, address, and phone number of a contributor. Query operations can be performed on the contributor field and the field containing the city, State, and ZIP code. Necessary files are loaded on PAC workstation.

SLAR (Side-Looking Airborne Radar): Joint
Earth Sciences Demonstration Disc. USGS.
USGS Side-Looking Airborne Radar (SLAR) digital image files of various U.S. geographic areas. 1 degree x 2 degree quadrangles. The files are generic raster and ASCII files that will work with any operating system that supports ISO 9660 CD-ROM format. SLAR is an electronic image-producing system. The radar is perpendicular to the ground, Thus results in an illuminated view of the terrain that enhances subtle surface features. SLAR's microwave energy obtains images either day or night. SLAR can be used to prepare image base maps of perpetually cloud-covered areas of the world where collecting conventional aerial photographs is difficult such as over the Aleutian Arc of Alaska. USGS Digital Data Series. USGS.
The USGS Digital Data Series (DDS) covers a wide variety of subjects. There is little subject organization or flow to the numbered sequence, so one must browse the list of titles to find out if anything it available within the series. In this manner, it is very much like the printed Misc. Investigations or Misc. Field Studies maps also produced by the USGS.

GNIS: Geographic Names Information System.
USGS/US GeoData.
Three copies: June 1991, 1998, and July 1999. The Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) is the nation's official automated geographic names repository and is now available on compact disc. The GNIS contains information for named features in the United States. The GNIS is the official typonymic reference for the Federal Government and was designed by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in cooperation with the U.S. Board on Geographic Names. The compact disc contains three GNIS data bases: 1. The National Geographic Names Data Base (NGNDB) contains almost 2 million entries for features in and under the jurisdiction of the United States. 2. The Topographic Map Names Data Base (TMNDB) is an inventory of all USGS-published topographic maps at various scales. 3. The Reference Data Base (RDB) is a collection of annotated bibliographies of all sources used in compiling information for the NGNDB. Each record in the NGNDB and TMNDB can contain a variety of location and description fields. The RDB contains one field - bibliography. The following fields in the NGNDB can be searched: State, feature name, feature type, county name, topographic map name, variant name, national forest name, geographic coordinates, source coordinates, elevation, and bibliographic reference code. The fields that can be displayed only are: State/county Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS) code, history, description, status, decision list, and record entry date. The following fields in the TMNDBcan be searched: State, topographic map name, reference coordinate, map scale, map reference code, county name, 7.5- by 15-minute map name, and history. There is one field that is for display only-percent of map in county. The data contained in this field, however, has not been verified and should be used for reference only.
