The Cataloging and Metadata unit is in charge of creating descriptive metadata records for digitized collections, books, journals, maps, audiovisual materials, archives, e-theses, and electronic resources displayed in the Library's online catalog. The cataloging process, in general, consists of three main sections: First, a detailed description of the items is provided; then, content analysis is performed for the assignment of subject headings, keywords and/or abstracts; and third, classification is provided in the form of library call numbers. As part of our responsibilities, we also perform database maintenance for the catalog and authority control for the University's thesis and dissertations.
Our main goal as organizers of information is to provide timely and accurate records for the library users. We welcome any questions and comments from the public about any aspect of descriptive metadata/cataloging, or to fix mistakes and discrepancies found in cataloging records.
