About Email and Chat Reference Services

Who can use chat?

Chat reference service is limited to the faculty, staff and students of the University of Tennessee (Knoxville). You must have a netid and password.

Who can use e-mail?

Anyone

What kinds of questions do we answer through chat and e-mail?

We will provide answers to brief, factual questions such as the verification of a bibliographic citation, spelling or definition of a word, or addresses and phone numbers of companies. We will also provide brief introductions to starting research, as well as instructions in using the catalog, databases and other library resources. For lengthy research consultations, we will refer you to the appropriate subject librarian.

There are some limitations to online reference service. For instance, we do not provide:
  • In-depth research, such as compiling a bibliography, searching multiple issues of a periodical, or complex interactions that are not well-suited to the computer mediated environment.
  • Genealogical searches.
  • Book renewals, holds, and other circulation functions. Please contact the Circulation Department.
  • Delivery of electronic full-text of articles (see copyright for more information).

How quickly is an e-mail question answered?

We monitor e-mail all the hours the library is open and respond to questions promptly - usually within 4 hours. Questions sent when the library is closed are answered during the next business day.

Is your chat or e-mail transaction private?

The University of Tennessee Libraries respects the privacy of users, but cannot guarantee the confidentiality of files, electronic mail, or other information stored or transmitted electronically (see the University's Acceptable Use Policy ). Use of both chat and e-mail reference service constitutes consent for the UT Libraries (Knoxville) to use transcripts for research and statistic-gathering purposes and to evaluate service quality.

Inappropriate behavior in chat...

Abusive, obscene, threatening or harassing messages will not be tolerated. We reserve the right to terminate a chat session.
