Linear Feet: The collection occupies 1.5 linear feet of shelf space.

Abstract: This collection consists of unofficial papers relating to the appointment of John Shumaker as president of the University of Tennessee in 2002, as well as some relating to state and internal audits of the University of Tennessee from 2003, including a "Review of the Issues Related to the Presidency of Dr. John Shumaker," October 2003, and a Special Review of the Office of the President, August 2003. Other materials include printed emails from 2002 concerning the presidential search and appointment, biographies of previous President Emerson H. Fly and John Shumaker, and newspapers from 2002.The collection also includes slides and a CD-ROM of digital photographs of John Shumaker at various UT events, a calendar given out to employees, a Year In Review for 2002-2003, and online articles concerning the presidential search and the scandal involving Shumaker and the use of the UT plane in 2003.

Biographical Note: John W. Shumaker was president of the University of Tennessee from 2002-2004. He was previously the president of the University of Louisville. In 2003, internal and state audits of questionable presidential expenses led to his resignation, and the remainder of his term was served by former UT President Joseph E. Johnson. After leaving UT, he worked to enhance educational opportunities in Afghanistan.

Scope and Content Note: This collection consists of unofficial papers relating to the appointment of John Shumaker as president of the University of Tennessee in 2002, as well as some relating to state and internal audits of the University of Tennessee from 2003, including a "Review of the Issues Related to the Presidency of Dr. John Shumaker," October 2003, and a Special Review of the Office of the President, August 2003.
    Appointment materials include printed emails from 2002 concerning the presidential search, biographies of previous President Emerson H. Fly and John Shumaker, and newspapers including the Knoxville News-Sentinel, Torchbearer, UT Faculty-Senate Newsletter, the University of Louisville Magazine, Metropulse, and the Daily Beacon, dealing with the UT presidential search and appointment of John Shumaker as UT President in 2002.
     Additional materials relating to the presidency include the Year in Review report of the University from 2002-2003, written by the interim president Joseph E. Johnson, a speech given by Shumaker in 2003 on the Education Environment and Academic Libraries, the Fall 2004 edition of Tennessee Alumni with an article on Shumaker's presidency up to that point, slides of Shumaker at a dinner at the president's residence, a CD-ROM of images of Shumaker at the UT Health Science Center at Grand Rounds, and a 2003 calendar.
