Biographical Note: The Agricultural Extension Service started as an agricultural experiment station in Knoxville, Tennessee, as part of the University of Tennessee's College of Agriculture. Researchers worked with beef, milk, poultry, insecticides, and agronomy experiments. The Extension Service became official in 1913 and eventually spread across the state. One half of Tennessee was woodlands with a significant forestry industry. As such, in the 1930s, the College of Agriculture opened a two-year program in forestry and wildlife at the urging of the TVA, which eventually became a regular part of the curriculum with a four-year degree program.
