Biographical Note/Information: The first literary society at the Univeristy of Tennessee was founded in 1826. Its original name was the Republican Dialectic Society, and in 1835 its name changed to the Dialectic Adelphic Society. One year later the organization again changed its name to the Chi Delta Literary Society and an opposition party, the Philomathesian Literary Club, quickly formed. These societies were the main social centers for the college during the pre-Civil War era. Their weekly meeting focused on political, historical, social, and economic topics and students gave original orations. After the Civil War both societies published journals of their essays, poetry, and university news. In the 1890s the establishment of a Law Department resulted in the creation of the McKinney Club, a law debating society. The 1890s also saw the admission of women to the university and the organization of female literary societies such as the Barbara Blount Literary Society. Over the next twenty years these societies declined in activities as other student clubs and administrative agencies took their place.
