Biographical Note:
William Herman Jesse (1908-1970) served as the Director of Libraries at the University of
Tennessee from 1943 until July 1970. He attended Transylvania College in Lexington, KY,
the University of Kentucky, received his degree in Library Science from Columbia University
in 1938, and received a second masters from Brown University. While at the University of
Tennessee, he raised the library's collection to over a million books, and obtained entry for
the University of Tennessee Library system into the Association of Research Libraries, a select group of libraries recognized for excellence as research centers.
