Biographical Note: James D. Hoskins Library was named after former UT President James D. Hoskins (1934-1946). First titled the Central Library, it served first as the main library for the University, then as a graduate library after the construction of the John C. Hodges Undergraduate Library in 1969, which became the main library in 1987. Afterwards, Hoskins Library housed smaller branch library services, such as the UT Special Collections, Archives, and Map Libraries, as well as serving as temporary housing to various UT services such as the Registrar's office, OIT Networking Services, and the Baker Center for Public Policy.

Scope and Content Note: The James D. Hoskins Library Architectural Collection includes Information relevant to the building's unique interior architectural details, including artwork on the ceiling of the main staircase, and detailed inscriptions on the ceiling of the reference room. The collection includes articles, publications, pamphlets, and a description of the detailed architectural work on the University of Tennessee Hoskins Library ceiling, including symbolism and translations. Also included is the "Handbook of the Library Containing Descriptive Information and a Few Suggestions," in which the history of the UT Library systems is outlined, including the librarians and innovations used. Also included is an article on the theft of the Audigier Art Gallery, housed in Hoskins Library in 1973.
