Biographical Note: The College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources has been an established part of the University of Tennessee since it became a land-grant institution following the Civil War in the 1870s. Since then, it has founded the Agricultural Extension Service in Knoxville, TN, and branches across the state of Tennessee, hosted the East Tennessee Farmers Convention and 4-H clubs. The Institute of Agriculture at the University of Tennessee includes Dairy, Poultry, Animal Husbandry, Horticulture, Argonomy, Agricultural Machinery, and other related fields.

Scope and Content Note: This collection includes materials gathered in the preparation of a history of the Institute of Agriculture and Agricultural Experiment Station at the University of Tennessee. It was compiled in preparation for the bicentennial celebration of the University of Tennessee in 1994 by Dr. Horace Smith. Dr. Smith's death in 1994 delayed the final product until 1999, when the completed manuscript, Honored Calling: A History of the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources, was published.
Series I includes publications, including Agricultural Experiment Station bulletins from the late eighteen hundreds, containing articles such as "Weeds of the Farm," "The Chinch Bug," "A Chemical Study of the Cotton Plant," "Grasses of Tennessee, Part II," as well as Leaflets and Circulars from 1932-1957. There is also a publication on the UT-AEC Agricultural Research Laboratory at Oak Ridge, TN, from 1966 that outlines some of the radiation experiments being done on plants and animals.
Series II includes research materials, including unpublished histories on the University and the Institute of Agriculture, newsletters, correspondence, articles, and various notes on the department's history.
Series III includes digital and visual materials, including digital files of the college history on 5 1/2 inch and 3 1/2 inch floppy disks, and photographs. Photographs include students, faculty, the campus, experiments, farm scenes, and the East Tennessee Farmers Convention. There are also portraits of Harcourt Morgan, Charles Dabney, O. P. Temple, and various other agriculture faculty, as well as photographs including turn of the century agriculture students, the UT Farm, and UT buildings. There is a collection of older photographs used in the Farmer's Convention exhibit entitled "Century of Progress" in 1961. The slide collection includes slides from the mid to late twentieth century, including slides of the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, campus, the UT Farm, and agricultural photographs from other states.
Oversize materials include color and black and white drawings of Morrill Hall, oversize editions of the Tennessee Farmer and Homemaker from 1961, and an agricultural scrapbook, filled with primarily newspaper articles relevant to the Agricultural College and Experiment Station.
