Biographical Note: Mary Baker was the University Librarian from 1923 to 1943. she graduated from Lincoln University in Lincoln, Illinois, and attended the University of Illinois Library School and graduated from New York State Library School in Albany. She worked at Bryn Mawr before serving as head of the cataloging department at University of Missouri, before teaching library school at Pittsburgh, PA. She served as head of the cataloging department in the Pittsburgh public library from 1920 to 1923, when she began work at the University of Tennessee library, where she stayed until retirement in 1943. During her tenure, she helped plan the new library building in 1931 and organized the move of the books to what is now Hoskins Library.
