Abstract: This collection contains programs for the Graduate Hooding Ceremonies of December 2004 and May 2005, two copies of the September 2004 Torch Night Ceremony program, the script for the May 2005 Graduate Hooding ceremony, including speeches of Dr. Anne Mayhew, Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Dean of Graduate Studies, and Loren Crabtree, Chancellor of University of Tennessee, Knoxville. There is also the script for the December 2006 commencement ceremony, including speech given by Civil Rights activist Rita Geier.

Biographical Note: The Graduate Hooding Ceremony is a commencement ceremony for graduate students only, including the ceremonial hooding of the doctoral students. Torch Night was an annual ceremony from 1926 to the mid-1960s, until recently when it experienced a revival. It is a ceremony for incoming freshmen, where they pledge allegiance to the University of Tennessee. It has an accompanying ceremony known as Aloha Oe, where outgoing seniors are reminded of their Torch Night pledges and pass the torch to the incoming freshmen class.

Scope and Content Note: This collection contains programs for the Graduate Hooding Ceremonies of December 2004 and May 2005, two copies of the September 2004 Torch Night Ceremony program, the script for the May 2005 Graduate Hooding ceremony, including speeches of Dr. Anne Mayhew, Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Dean of Graduate Studies, and Loren Crabtree, Chancellor of University of Tennessee, Knoxville. There is also the script for the December 2006 commencement ceremony, including speech given by Civil Rights activist Rita Geier. Graduate Hooding programs include information on speakers and include a list of graduates with their degrees.
