Biographical Note: The Knoxville 22 were a group of nineteen students and three non-students who were arrested during a student protest involving the picketing of the University of Tennessee Administration building. After the announced retirement of UT President Andy Holt, the Board of Trustees elected Ed Boling president in early 1970. Students objected to the lack of student or faculty consideration in the decision, and responded to Boling's election by picketing the Administration building on January 15, 1970. Several thousand students were estimated to have blocked the entrance to the Administration building, and when they refused to disperse, Knoxville and campus police arrived to break up the protest. In the resulting scuffle, four police and seven protesters were injured, and a total of 22 people were brought up on charges of inciting riots. The incident had faculty, students, and the Knoxville community denouncing (or supporting) the University administration for its harsh stand against the protesters that resulted in violence.
