Biographical Note: Dick Gregory was a civil rights activist in the 1960s. He was first asked to speak on campus by a student group, which was vetoed by Chancellor Charles Weaver, along with the planned visits of Adam Clayton Powell, an African-American member of Congress, and Timothy Leary, a pro-drug activist. These cancellations led to student activism to promote an open speaker policy, which was implemented by the winter of 1968, when Gregory was finally allowed to speak at UT.
Scope and Content Note: This collection contains a mock U.S. dollar, dated November 5, 1968, proclaiming Dick Gregory for president, with Mark Lane as his vice president, urging readers to cast write-in ballots for the two candidates. It was handed out amongst the audience when civil rights activist Dick Gregory spoke at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, campus in the winter of 1968-1969.
