February 4, 2004. To thank students
for the work and services they provide for The
University of Tennessee Libraries, the second Student Recognition
Festival will be held on Tuesday, February 17, 2004 from 2:30-4 p.m. in
the Library Staff Room (Room 646) of the John C. Hodges Library. The
Libraries' Diversity Committee is hosting the event.
This event celebrates all student employees who contribute to the
Libraries, and the Festival's theme this year is "You are the star!"
"We are pleased to have such a fine group of 'stars' to honor," said
Molly Royse, who co-chairs the Diversity Committee. Co-chair Becky
Roller continued, "Student employees are at the heart of library
service. Without their energy and spirit, the library would be unable
to offer all of the services at all of the times we do. They also help
us better understand our student patrons." "Students can sometimes
know what's going on before we do, which helps make our services better
and expands our roles as information providers," added Sheila Stephens,
who is helping to organize the event.
Students who have worked in the library system for two or more years
will receive a special honor. The students are each selecting a
favorite library book, and that book is being personalized with an
embossed bookplate. The Diversity Committee is coordinating the
placement of these books in the Libraries’ collection.
Barbara Dewey, Dean of Libraries, will also acknowledge the students
who serve on her Dean's Student Advisory Committee. These students,
who represent each college, the Student Government Association, and
Graduate Student Senate, provide invaluable information about the needs
of student patrons.
The event is open to all library staff and student employees. Dean
Barbara Dewey will recognize the honorees beginning at 3 p.m.
